Another day, another superhero project canceled. Despite the box office success of Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day, it was sandwiched between the cancellation of Wonder Man Season 2 and Mahershala Ali confirming he is no longer attached to star in Blade. The news keeps coming, this time on the DC front, as a project that was announced back in 2023 as part of James Gunn’s initial DCU slate is no longer moving forward. David Jenkins took to Threads to confirm that his Booster Gold series was no longer moving forward at DC Studios. Jenkins, who previously created the acclaimed series Our Flag Means Death for HBO and People of Earth for TBS, shared a story regarding Mahershala Ali’s recent comments about no longer being attached to Blade. In his post, Jenkins said, “My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward. Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement, so I’ll just apply it here as well.” The news comes just over a year after Jenkins was hired to work on Booster Gold on Jul. 23, 2025. DC Studios has not officially commented on Jenkins’ post. Update: The Wrap reports that DC Studios is searching for a new creative team to tackle Booster Gold.

Announced back in January 2023, Booster Gold was set to focus on the titular time-traveling superhero. Created by Dan Jurgens, the character first appeared in Booster Gold #1 in February 1986. He is a time traveler who goes back in time and uses his advanced technology to pose as a superhero. One of DC’s most comedic superheroes, Booster Gold is often portrayed as a glory-seeking ex-athlete who reveals a heart of gold. The news of DC Studios not moving forward with David Jenkins’ Booster Gold comes three months after James Gunn confirmed the series was still in development. This is the second setback for the project, as it was originally reported that Danny McBride was set to develop the television series in 2024, but ultimately dropped out. Booster Gold’s cancellation comes after Supergirl bombed at the box office and several weeks ahead of Lanterns’ on HBO. Despite the latest announcement, DC Studios is still developing original series. The next one up is from American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, and will focus on Jimmy Olsen and the Daily Planet crew profiling different supervillains. Season 1 will feature Jimmy Tatro as the Flash villain Gorilla Grodd.

Booster Gold is the latest in a long line of announced DCU titles to have been canceled. Also announced as part of the initial DCU slate was The Authority, which Gunn confirmed was put on the backburner in 2026. Sgt. Rock was set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, but the plug was pulled on the project back in April 2025 just as casting was underway. While Booster Gold could still be revived by another creative team, it seems the DCU’s priorities are elsewhere.
