‘A Minecraft Movie’ Swings Past Most Divisive Spider-Man Hit In Its Quest Towards $1 Billion at Global Box Office
May 11, 2025
After having completed more than a month of release in theaters worldwide, A Minecraft Movie has passed its biggest milestone yet. The video game adaptation remains the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year, and is now in the home stretch of its mission to hit the coveted $1 billion mark at the global box office. Directed by Jared Hess, A Minecraft Movie stars hit-makers Jack Black and Jason Momoa in the lead roles, and has successfully demonstrated the power of the Gen-Z audience. Its unexpected success can be compared to the viral hit Five Nights at Freddy’s a couple of years ago.
With over $400 million domestically and more than $500 million from overseas markets, A Minecraft Movie’s cumulative global haul has now passed the $900 million mark. It currently stands at $909 million, which puts it ahead of millennial favorites such as Spider-Man 3, Shrek 2, and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Is this a passing of the baton moment? A Minecraft Movie is now among the 75 highest-grossing films in global box office history. It’s also only the 14th Warner Bros. film ever to pass the $900 million mark at the global box office.
A Minecraft Movie is Momoa’s second-biggest hit, behind the first Aquaman film. It’s also the third-biggest hit of Black’s illustrious career, behind Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Speaking of that animated blockbuster, which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide in 2023, A Minecraft Movie is the second-biggest video game adaptation ever made. But it’ll likely remain in this position, considering the massive gap between it and Super Mario Bros. Both movies are united by the fact that they received mediocre reviews, but were embraced by the target audience.
‘Minecraft’ Will Debut Digitally This Week After an Extended Theatrical Window
A Minecraft Movie holds a stellar 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, despite a “rotten” 47% critics’ score on the aggregator website. In his review, Collider’s Nate Richard described it as “surprisingly tolerable,” and praised the filmmakers for being “well aware of its weirdness.” Produced on a reported budget of $150 million, A Minecraft Movie isn’t yet available on home video, having been given an unusually long theatrical window by W.B. But it’ll land on transactional services in a couple of days.
Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
