The Untrainable Dragon Review: Epic Universe’s Must-See-Show!

Jun 9, 2025

Epic Universe has two shows to choose from as of opening day and there is only one show (in my eyes) worth watching and it’s this one, here’s our The Untrainable Dragon review. The star show at Universa’s brand new theme park and it’s an absolute must-see as this live show combines music, action scenes and dragons, LOTS of dragons and after debuting at Universal Beijing a few years ago they’ve perfected it for the Orlando stage.Join Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid and Gobber as they try to solve the mystery of the Untrainable Dragon and in perfect timing with the brand new live-action version of the movie now in cinemas there feels like no better time to soak up all How to Train your Dragon goodness than right now. From immersing yourself in the Isle of Berk you step into the brand new theatre for The Untrainable Dragon and it’s beautiful, the stage is set up very much like a West End show and the combination of puppets, impressive sets and set changes and costumes really felt like a well-rounded production unlike the Fantastic Beasts show over at Ministry of Magic which was plagued with issues every single time during our four (yes four) times of trying to see it.Whilst only around 20-minutes in length the show certainly packs a punch and gives you more than enough time to go and explore the park and not take up too much of the day whilst still immersing you in the world you find yourselves within. In Beijing what blows people away is Hiccup and Toothless flying over the audience but with their version of the show the introduction of Toothless is much more seamless and hidden whereas where the dragon comes out at Epic Universe is much more open and obvious. Certainly not a negative but you can tell the Beijing version of the show is just a little tidier than that of this particular one and with the show being plagued with issues during preview week it does feel like it’ll take some time to bed in and run smoothly and that’s a given with any show really.Beautiful costumes and massive dragons on stage, who’s going to find a negative there?! They are absolutely beautiful and they’re so fluid and real looking and the puppeteers make the transitions seem seamless, it’s a breathtaking spectacle that will entertain young and old audiences alike. The show is certainly the benchmark of what all theme park shows should aspire to be but as I keep saying with Epic Universe there never feels like enough to do around this half-day park so hopefully in the future more shows are planned because Universal is certainly in short supply of them compared to their neighbours down the round who have introduced yet another two (Villains and The Little Mermaid) to their extensive range in the time Universal have added their own two and well… the Fantastic Beasts one is a lot to be desired.Make sure to catch an early show JUST incase a show gets cancelled and that’s only because The Untrainable Dragon is a very technical show so I’d give this advice out just incase anything goes wrong in early showings then you can come back later and check it all out with no hiccups… okay… one Hiccup but not Hiccups. Make sense? This is one show you absolutely can’t miss when you visit Epic Universe. Check out the VLOG before from our first visit to the park and our first showing of this amazing production after we eventually got to see a showing due to various technical issues.
