Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey Set for ‘Wicked’ Reunion — but There’s a Catch
Dec 17, 2025
It may not have lived up to the success of the first installment, but Wicked: For Good has certainly proven a hit with audiences, currently sitting on $468 million worldwide. Jon M. Chu’s second half of the musical masterpiece has earned Golden Globe nominations for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande in acting categories, nods for two original songs, and the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, although it missed out in the Best Picture category and looks destined to perhaps miss out in the same category at next year’s Academy Awards. However, amid the divisive discourse, fans of the sequel have received exciting news from a new report suggesting that stars Grande and Jonathan Bailey are set to join forces once again on a new musical project. However, instead of a feature film, the pair are reported to be co-starring in a revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Sunday in the Park With George. Set to hit London in 2027, the adaptation is to be directed by multiple Tony Award and Olivier Award-winning Marianne Elliott, with all involved reportedly “cautiously optimistic” about the pair’s involvement. “At early read-throughs, I’ve heard that both Grande and Bailey have excelled in the parts,” the report said. “They’re joined at the hip as friends, having now worked together for the past few years on Wicked and this year’s terrific Wicked: For Good with director Jon M. Chu and Cynthia Erivo.”
‘Wicked: For Good’ Received Mixed Reviews
Although boasting an impressive 93% from audiences on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, just 2% fewer than the previous installment, Wicked: For Good stumbled to a middling 68% from critics on the site, with the consensus reading, “Taking one last lap down the yellow brick road, Wicked: For Good’s darker tone and unhurried pacing sometimes get in the way, but this epic conclusion ultimately brings Elphaba and Glinda’s story home in rousing fashion.” In Therese Lacson’s review for Collider, she was more optimistic about this second chapter, awarding a strong 8/10 and concluding:
“Wicked: For Good is not only a loyal adaptation, but it also builds on what works from the first film while leaning into its lead performances. The characters are more mature and nuanced, making it a worthy successor to the first movie. It doesn’t surpass Wicked, but as a double feature, it does justice to one of the best musicals ever, and that’s not an easy feat to accomplish.”
Wicked: For Good is available in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
