‘Hijack’ Star Idris Elba Teases Future of Apple TV Action Thriller Series

Jan 15, 2026

Fans of the action thriller Hijack can revisit the beloved series today, as Apple TV has released the Season 2 premiere of the show, starring Idris Elba. Season 1 was highly successful with audiences and critics, and the streamer quickly greenlit Season 2. But is there actually more juice in Hijack beyond the second season? Elba has sahred his opinion on the show’s future, and though he doesn’t reveal the brightest of updates, the actor offered an exciting alternative. Elba recently sat down to chat with Radio Times to promote Hijack Season 2. The MCU icon, who also starred in one of 2025’s most thrilling movies, A House of Dynamite, always keeps a tight schedule. In the near future, he will return to the director’s seat for the films Above the Below and This Is How It Goes, and Elba is also set to reprise his role as DCI John Luther for another Netflix sequel based on the beloved detective character. Elba is keeping himself busy, and that’s likely the reason why he doesn’t talk much about his future in the Apple TV series. When sharing the details of Season 2 of Hijack, Elba remained cryptic about his character’s fate, and even threw out a joke about a possible cliffhanger ending:
“I think there is this chase for closure throughout the season. The more that’s revealed from episode 1 all the way to the end, it’s like ‘What? Who? Why?’ I think the satisfying beat at the end is this moment of Sam, dead or alive. Alright, I’m being silly – no!
“We owe it to an audience with the nature of this to give them some answers and Sam wants answers as well. That’s what I think this explosive element is.”
In Hijack Season 1, Elba’s Sam Nelson used his negotiating skills to take down a hijacking plan during a flight from Dubai to London. As the series returns, Sam changes the mode of transportation, but the never-ending twists and turns are still there. Season 2 consists of eight episodes, which will stream exclusively on Apple TV all the way through March.
Can the Future of ‘Hijack’ Hold Anything Other Than Hijacking?

Discussing further details about Hijack and the possible development of more seasons, Idris Elba remained coy. While the Golden Globe winner is committed to finishing his character’s arc by providing the answers his fans deserve, there’s a clear intention not to extend the story more than necessary. Hijack should not become that procedural where Sam Nelson saves the world in multiple, and certainly unbelievable, circumstances.

“People ask me about ‘would you do another season?’ and I say I’m not sure how you could,” Elba admits. However, he does say how the show could continue without relying on the hijacking subplot. “But actually, I do think that there is another layer of storytelling that it wouldn’t necessarily involve hijacking. At this junction, if you like this series and this story, the hijacks, the hijacking is part of something else, isn’t it?” The actor adds:
“I don’t think we’ll ever come back – we’ll have to drag [co-creator Jim Field Smith] from Barbados – but there’s definitely the man Sam Nelson and what trauma looks like post-something like that and what the residue is. I would be interested in exploring that because it’s another thing, but it wouldn’t necessarily be hijacking.”
