Born Again’ Showrunner Confirms ‘Avengers’ Character Is Key to Street Level MCU [Exclusive]

Mar 18, 2026

Ahead of the Avengers’ return to the big screen later this year, Marvel Studios will return to street-level storytelling with the second season of Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. Along with making the show canon to everything that happened in Netflix’s Defenders Saga, Born Again gave Daredevil’s story the most tangible connections yet to the greater MCU. This included nods to Hawkeye and Spider-Man in the season’s second episode, setting the stage for this show’s cast to potentially play a bigger role in other stories outside of New York and Hell’s Kitchen. And one Avengers character will play a key role in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, showrunner Dario Scardapane reveals exclusively to MovieWeb. Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is already confirmed to add new ties to the wider universe, as Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones is confirmed for a comeback, along with other characters like Royce Johnson’s Detective Mahoney. While viewers still wait to find out if anybody else from MCU history will join the show’s cast list, there will at least be a few confirmed ties to the larger MCU narrative in store. Be warned, minor SPOILERS for Daredevil: Born again Season 2, Episode 1 to follow…

Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane and executive producer Sana Amanat discussed a nod in Season 2, Episode 1 to The New Avengers’ Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Asked how this could build toward something bigger down the road, Scardapane explained that Matthew Lillard’s Mr. Charles is “somebody who lives in the Val world,” prompting the team to want to make that connection. While he would love to have Val involved in this world, those choices are above his pay grade:
“So, building Mr. Charles as somebody who lives in the Val world, we wanted to make that connection. So, that’s why that’s on the other end of the phone call. For me, personally, away from everything MCU, I would love her to be part of our world. There’s a story in the back of my head I would love to tell you, but I don’t know, those choices aren’t mine.”
Additionally, Amanat commented on how nice it was to “have that connective tissue,” and wants to see more of it as a fan of the material:
“Yeah, it’s always nice to have that connective tissue, because you never know. So yes, as fans, we would love it.”

Disney

Hearing a mention of Val in Daredevil: Born Again not only expands the MCU further with the crossover but also sets up some serious repercussions for the streaming side. Considering Val is still a powerful player in the government as the director of the CIA, her connections with Matthew Lillard’s new character should only make New York even more dangerous, especially with the Kingpin on a warpath.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season, it is still unclear how much of an impact Val will have on the greater story. Fans will also remember that Thunderbolts* included no mention of anything that happened in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1, even though both were partially or completely set in New York City. But it’s surely unlikely The Man Without Fear missed the onslaught of Sentry. Regardless of how everything ties together, this season should deliver some of the most intense action and drama the MCU has to offer, particularly with names like Val’s in the mix. Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 will begin streaming on Disney+ on Mar. 24, 2026.
