Prime Video’s ‘God of War’ Casts ‘Lost’ Star Sonya Walger as Freya

Amazon’s upcoming God of War series that is currently in production is also one of the most anticipated of the next couple of years. Film and television adaptations of popular video games have been on the rise, with creative teams beginning to understand what works and what doesn’t. Prime Video had its own success with their adaptation of Bethesda’s Fallout, creating two seasons of television that have been incredibly well received. With God of War, there is a mix of cynicism and anticipation online for the project, which has now added another cast member, and arguably one of the most important of the series. In a report from Variety, it’s been revealed that Sonya Walger, best known for her work on the television series Lost, has been cast as Freya in a recurring role. She will be joining Ryan Hurst as Kratos, and Callum Vinson as his young son, Atreus. Given how involved the character she is playing is in the video games, it would be unsurprising if Walger is in most of the upcoming first season, which is currently in production with an estimated release sometime in 2027. The rest of the cast features Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur. The official description for the character of Freya is as follows:
“A Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s (Patinkin) ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day. She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya’s unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.”

The God of War games created by Santa Monica Studio are filled with rich lore, drawing from Greek and Norse Mythology and reimagining them as brutal and bloody stories, especially since Kratos brings the gods down to his level in his quest for revenge. The more recent games released in 2018 and 2022 are more somber and meditative in nature, with Kratos trying to put his violent past behind him before being dragged into the conflicts of the Norse gods.
Walger’s addition to the series as Freya is exciting, with the actor having an interesting role ahead of her as a god with a dark past who seeks solace in nature while also trying to protect her own children. It’s unclear how much of the two games the upcoming first season will adapt, though considering the amount of story content in both games, it will more than likely just be most of the first game, especially given how young the Atreus actor is. Freya also has one of the most interesting relationships with Kratos and Atreus in the series, so adding an actor like Walger will ensure the scenes they share will have the emotional depth they need.
