107 Years Later, First American Superhero Returns in Trailer for Streaming Reboot
May 29, 2026
After debuting more than a century ago, the first American superhero returns to screens in another reboot that’s headed to streaming. The superhero now dominates, well, everything. From the big screen to the streaming screen, the likes of The Avengers, Spider-Man, Batman, and more are in the cultural consciousness like never before. Well, now it’s time for the earlier masked American savior to ride back into our lives. Created all the way back in 1919, Johnston McCulley injected a swashbuckling, pulpy flavor into the masked vigilante with Zorro. And a new trailer for the latest reboot of the beloved character has now been released in anticipation of The Fox’s streaming comeback next month.

Starring Academy Award-winning actor Jean Dujardin (The Artist, The Wolf of Wall Street) as the legendary hero, Zorro gives the character a legacy sequel revival, as he finds himself middle-aged and questioning his place in the world while ruminating on his vigilante past. Described as a “French reimagining” of the classic character, Zorro takes us back in time to 1821. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Los Angeles, Don Diego de la Vega (Dujardin) unexpectedly inherits the role of mayor following his father’s death, only to discover a city drowning in debt and under the grip of the powerful Don Emmanuel (Eric Elmosnino). Donning the mask for the first time in 20 years, Zorro is at war on all fronts as he fights for the people while publicly trying to govern the city as its conflicted mayor. And, somewhere within the chaos, the lines between the man and the myth begin to blur in increasingly complicated ways.
France 2
Created by Benjamin Charbit and Noé Debré, with Audrey Dana, André Dussollier, and Salvatore Ficarra starring alongside Jean Dujardin, the eight-episode series is now all set to debut on June 30 exclusively in the U.S. and Canada on Kino Lorber’s MHz Choice (via IGN). Adding a little more comedic flair to the classic tale of fighting for justice and secret identities, the sight of Zorro donning his costume, swinging on his whip to take out several villains, and riding atop his trusted steed is sure to have fans feeling as giddy as the swashbuckling legend himself.
Over the years, Zorro has been adapted many times over, with the most famous being the 1950s Disney series starring Guy Williams (born Armando Joseph Catalano), the 1940 film The Mark of Zorro with Tyrone Power, and the Antonio Banderas-led franchise. Dujardin’s take is far from the only modern adaptation of the character. Following Mediawan’s acclaimed reboot series, which was released in 2024, CBS Studios is still trying to get a wild, gender-swapped reboot off the ground from director Robert Rodriguez, while Disney plans to relaunch the franchise with That ’70s Show producer Wilmer Valderrama under the mask, and a Django Unchained and Zorro crossover is now in the works.
