Fan Service Over Film Quality
May 30, 2026
From New Line Cinema comes the latest high-stakes installment in the blockbuster video game franchise in all its brutal glory, Mortal Kombat II. This time, the fan favorite champions—now joined by Johnny Cage himself—are pitted against one another in the ultimate, no-holds barred, gory battle to defeat the dark rule of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earthrealm and its defenders.
“Mortal Kombat II” (2026) continues the story established in the 2021 reboot as Earthrealm’s champions prepare for the long-awaited Mortal Kombat tournament against the forces of Outworld. With Shao Kahn threatening the survival of Earthrealm, familiar fighters like Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Jax, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Cole Young return alongside the live-action debut of Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban.
The Good
The biggest improvement in “Mortal Kombat II” is the simple fact that the tournament actually exists. That sounds basic, but after the previous movie avoided the tournament almost entirely, finally seeing the franchise embrace its core concept felt refreshing.
I also appreciated the deeper exploration of Outworld and Netherrealm lore. One of the strengths of the games has always been the mythology surrounding these different realms, and the sequel spends more time fleshing them out. The added world-building gives the movie a larger sense of scale and makes the universe feel more alive.
Fan service is everywhere in this movie, and for the most part, it works. The filmmakers clearly listened to the criticism surrounding the first film and leaned harder into recognizable video game elements. The arenas feel pulled directly from the games. The acid pits, spike-filled dungeons, and brutal battlegrounds all help reinforce the feeling that audiences are finally watching a true Mortal Kombat movie.
The fatalities also deliver. They are violent, bloody, and unapologetically excessive, exactly as they should be. Could some have been more creative? Sure. Still, I appreciated that the film never watered down the brutality. A Mortal Kombat movie should feel savage, and this one absolutely earns its R-rating.
Some of the fights genuinely impressed me as well. The standout is easily Kung Lao’s sequence, which ends up being the best fight in the entire movie. That scene proves you do not always need major Hollywood action stars to carry fight choreography. Sometimes the best move is simply letting martial artists and stunt performers do what they do best.
Kano also works much better this time around. In the previous film, the character often felt excessive. Here, the humor lands more naturally. Johnny Cage also brings solid comedic energy through his meta movie references and self-aware commentary. My audience was laughing consistently during several of his scenes.
The Bad
Unfortunately, “Mortal Kombat II” still struggles with inconsistent fight choreography. While some sequences are excellent, others feel awkward and overproduced. Several fights rely too heavily on visible wire work, which immediately kills the illusion. Once I could clearly see actors floating unnaturally through scenes, it became difficult to stay immersed.
The writing is also a major problem.
Much of the story feels predictable. Certain character moments are telegraphed so heavily that it becomes obvious where the narrative is heading long before it gets there. The film repeatedly signals major developments in ways that remove tension rather than build it.
There are also story decisions involving Liu Kang that simply do not work. Without spoiling specifics, the movie introduces major developments involving the character and barely explains them. Characters move on as if nothing significant happened, leaving some moments feeling confusing rather than impactful.
The biggest issue, however, is the forced comedy.
Before release, producers discussed adding more humor through reshoots, and unfortunately that decision shows. While characters like Kano and Johnny Cage naturally provide comic relief, the movie frequently pushes the humor too far. At times it starts feeling less like Mortal Kombat and more like a live-action cartoon.
One Johnny Cage fight sequence especially crosses the line into full Scooby-Doo territory with slapstick-style antics that completely undermine the tone. Instead of enhancing the fun, moments like these make the movie feel less serious and less confident in its own identity.
Some of the costume and makeup work also misses the mark. A few character designs look closer to convention cosplay than big-budget blockbuster filmmaking. That inconsistency makes it harder to fully buy into the world, especially during scenes that are supposed to feel intimidating or epic.
The Verdict
“Mortal Kombat II” is absolutely made for the fans, but that comes at the expense of becoming a genuinely strong film. The movie often feels trapped in the mindset of 1990s video game adaptations, where fan references and spectacle mattered more than strong storytelling or polished execution. To be fair, it is slightly better than the previous movie. The tournament structure helps tremendously, the lore gets expanded, and several action sequences genuinely work. The film is entertaining. It understands the appeal of the franchise far better than the 2021 reboot did.
Still, this is nowhere near a flawless victory.
What hurts the movie most is the fact that audiences already know what a great Mortal Kombat adaptation can look like. The animated film “Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge” already proved this franchise can successfully balance serious storytelling, brutal action, mythology, and humor. That movie understood restraint. “Mortal Kombat II” often feels like it is trying too hard to entertain at every possible moment. The result is a sequel filled with fan service, gore, and nostalgia, but one that still struggles to evolve beyond the limitations that have held back live-action Mortal Kombat films for decades.
