Prime Video Superhero Series Named Biggest on Streaming Following Divisive Series Finale

Jun 1, 2026

Prime Video has enjoyed a long run of success in the streaming world over the last decade, with multiple streaming series dominating the charts. This includes a couple of fantasy outings with shows like The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout, taking established franchises from movies and video games and turning them into serialized streaming successes. The same can be said about book adaptations, thanks to projects like Reacher, which became one of Prime Video’s most-watched titles and has already led to an exciting spin-off coming in the near future. The streamer has also found massive success with The Boys, created by Eric Kripke (Supernatural), which has provided some of the most dramatic and intense superhero action of any show this decade. Providing the most grounded look yet at a world filled with powered individuals, The Boys concluded its fifth season on May 20, bringing multiple wild death scenes across eight episodes and sending its protagonists off with a bang. While some may not have agreed with many of the decisions made in the finale, it did not stop the series from continuing its run at the top of the charts. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series finale for The Boys earned 947 million minutes of viewing time for the week of Apr. 27 to May 3. This placed the show at the top of Nielsen’s streaming charts for the first time since the week of The Boys’ Season 4 finale in July 2024. This ranking placement comes after Season 5, Episode 8, the show’s final episode, heavily divided viewers online and split opinions on how the story concluded. Several main characters were killed off before the credits rolled, while others saw relatively happy endings in a fractured post-Homelander world.

Across the internet, many felt The Boys did not end on the epic high note that was expected, largely due to Homelander’s final moments not being a full-blown “scorched Earth” tirade on the entire world. Instead, Antony Starr’s supe lost his powers after a blast from Karen Fukuhara’s Kimiko, groveling at Billy Butcher’s feet in front of a live audience. It was a personally gratifying moment for Butcher, who has spent five seasons willing to cross any line possible to get his revenge on Homerlander. While The Boys’ story is not fully over (thanks to Vought Rising coming in 2027), the original show will have a lasting legacy on Prime Video after its seven-year streaming run. How it performs in the weeks after its series finale is a mystery, but it is sure to be a fixture on the charts due to the controversy surrounding what went down.

All five seasons of The Boys are now streaming in full on Prime Video.
