Apple TV’s Monsterverse Franchise Officially Expands With Two New Additions
Aug 11, 2026
After Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. dominated theaters with a quartet of new Godzilla and Kong movies, the MonsterVerse franchise expanded to Apple TV with the release of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters in 2023. This show takes the story back to 2015, one year after Godzilla’s reemergence, centering on a pair of half-siblings who investigate their father’s connection to Monarch, the organization that monitors giant monsters known as Titans (such as Godzilla and Kong). After two seasons of action here, the studios now have plans to expand even further.
In Nov. 2025, three months before Monarch’s second season debuted, reports teased development on a spin-off series tied back to the MonsterVerse, centered on Colonel Lee Shaw’s experience going behind enemy lines in Russia in 1984 to prevent the Soviets from releasing a titan that could change the Cold War. Wyatt Russell is set to return as Lee Shaw, and the series will also feature Millie Brady (Roadkill) and Pliou Asbaek (Game of Thrones) in undisclosed new roles. Now, that cast continues to expand with a couple of new additions. Deadline reported that Legendary and Apple TV cast Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic for roles in the upcoming MonsterVerse spin-off series. This did not come with any information on either actress’s role in the show. Nielsen is best known for her roles in Warner Bros.’ two Wonder Woman movies and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (Hippolyta), both Gladiator movies (Lucilla), and 2021’s Nobody (Becca Mansell). Katic’s most notable performance came in Castle, in which she starred as Kate Beckett alongside Nathan Fillion’s Richard Castle; she also has a history with Wonder Woman, voicing Diana Prince in all three Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths movies.
Legendary
As of writing, there are no updates on when this new spin-off series will officially begin shooting, what its title will be, or when it is expected to be released on Apple TV. Thankfully, with an impressive cast assembling around Wyatt Russell (who has found massive success in this franchise alongside his father, Kurt Russell), there is already plenty to look forward to with more of this saga’s history being explored in the Cold War era of monsters.
The MonsterVerse is also set to expand even further on the big screen soon, with Godzilla x Kong: Supernova set to be released in theaters on Mar. 26, 2027. Details on this new movie are largely being kept under wraps, but promotional teases have hinted at the story exploring the delicate coexistence between humanity and titans while a massive monster storm stems from another epic clash between the two titular giants.
