Sep 20, 2024
Netflix has revealed a new look at their ongoing live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024) at Netflix Geeked Week. Based on the animated series of the same name, Avatar: The Last Airbender is set amid four nations; water, air, earth, and fire, and follows a young boy known as the Avatar who must master the four elemental powers to save a world at war, and fight a ruthless enemy bent on stopping him. Today, they announced the official start of production on Season 2 with a new video. The brief footage reveals our first look at the beloved character Toph Beifong, the young earthbending master who becomes a key part of Aang’s group. As well as this first look, it has also now been revealed that You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah and Beef star Miya Cech has been cast in the role. You can check out the clop below.
Developed by Albert Kim, Avatar: The Last Airbenderstars Gordon Cormier (The Stand) as Aang, Kiawentiio (Rutherford Falls) as Katara, Ian Ousley (Physical) as Sokka, Dallas Liu (Tekken) as Prince Zuko, and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee (Kim’s Convenience) as General Iroh. The rest of the cast includes Daniel Dae Kim (Lost, Hellboy), Ken Leung (Old, Lost), Maria Zhang (WorkInProgress: A Comedy Web-Series), Elizabeth Yu (Somewhere in Queens), and Amber Midthunder (Prey). You can check out the richly detailed official synopsis for the series below:
“Water. Earth. Fire. Air. The four nations once lived in harmony, with the Avatar, master of all four elements, keeping peace between them. But everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked and wiped out the Air Nomads, the first step taken by the firebenders towards conquering the world. With the current incarnation of the Avatar yet to emerge, the world has lost hope. But like a light in the darkness, hope springs forth when Aang (Cormier), a young Air Nomad — and the last of his kind — reawakens to take his rightful place as the next Avatar.
Alongside his newfound friends Sokka (Ousley) and Katara (Kiawentiio), siblings and members of the Southern Water Tribe, Aang embarks on a fantastical, action-packed quest to save the world and fight back against the fearsome onslaught of Fire Lord Ozai (Kim). But with a driven Crown Prince Zuko (Liu) determined to capture them, it won’t be an easy task. They’ll need the help of the many allies and colorful characters they meet along the way.”
Avatar: The Last Airbender Was Met With a Mixed Response From Critics
The response from critics to Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbenderwas sadly rather middling, with the series now standing at 61% on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. “Avatar: The Last Airbender serves as a solid live-action entry point into the beloved franchise, although it only sporadically recaptures the magic of its source material,” the Critics Consensus reads.
Following the release of Season 1, Netflix revealed that they will allow the show to continue rather than unceremoniously cancel the project, something which they’ve become infamous for. Not only that, the streamer will even let the story conclude by renewing Avatar: The Last Airbender for two more seasons, with the plan being that Season 3 will be the last.
