Betsy Brandt Reveals Which Breaking Bad Scene She Still Can’t Watch
May 9, 2023
Betsy Brandt is looking back at her run on Breaking Bad, and there’s one scene she admits she still cannot bring herself to watch. In all five seasons of the hit AMC drama series, Brandt played Marie Schrader, an X-ray technician who struggles with kleptomania. She’s a person who has some issues, sure, but nowhere near what’s happening with many of the other characters on the show, as far as their nefarious deeds. The show has no shortage of disturbing scenes with this in mind.
With that said, the scene Brandt still refuses to watch has nothing to do with murder, meth use, or any of those other happenings in the show. Speaking about the program in a new interview on The Rich Eisen Show, Brandt was asked about the toughest scenes in her opinion. Giving it some thought, she reveals how the fight between Marie and her sister Skyler (Anna Gunn) is one that she continues to avoid, even after all these years. This is because she recognizes this as the destruction of the two sisters’ relationship. As Brandt explains in the interview:

“Oh, it’s heartbreaking… You know, there’s some scenes I haven’t even watched because it’s too hard for me… When Skyler and Marie fight, and I slap her. That was one of the saddest days for me, for my character. Because that, I love their relationship, and I was like, ‘That’s done now. That will never be the same.’ Once I know that she was involved, that she had anything to do with Hank [getting shot].”
In the scene in question, Skyler confesses to Marie that she had known about Walter’s (Bryan Cranston) criminal activities for a while. She even helped him come up with the cover story of pretending he acquired his wealth through gambling. Marie is floored by this, as Walter’s involvement in the criminal underworld ultimately led to Hank getting shot and nearly killed by the Salmanca twins. Skyler apologizes, but Marie responds with a hard slap across the face, vowing that Walter will not be getting away with what he’s done. Marie even attempts to leave with baby Holly, feeling she needs to keep the child safe, escalating the fight. It ends with Hank coming in and telling Marie to give Holly to Skyler.

Marie Returned in Better Call Saul
AMC
Brandt returned to the role of Marie Schrader one last time. She did not have an appearance in the Netflix follow-up film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, but she did appear in the final season of Better Call Saul. It’s possibly the last time fans will get to see Marie unless there’s another spinoff series that ends up getting made in the Breaking Bad world. A spinoff involving Hank (Dean Norris) has even been teased by Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould, which would allow for more of Marie.
“Every single one of these characters could have a whole show,” Gould told Metro. “There’s no question. I mean, Kim Wexler, Mike Ehrmantraut, Hank Schrader… I could see the Hank Schrader show, absolutely.”
You can see Brandt in the final season of Better Call Saul, which was recently made available for streaming on Netflix in the United States.
