Brand New Day’ Casts ‘The Bear’ Star Liza Colón-Zayas in MCU Sequel

May 15, 2025

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has added another prominent television actor to the cast of the MCU sequel, which will feature Tom Holland and Sadie Sink. Directed by Shang-Chi’s Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day will usher in a new era for Marvel’s web-slinger, who is still reeling from the life-changing events of No Way Home.
According to Deadline, Emmy-winning The Bear star Liza Colón-Zayas has joined the cast of Marvel Studios and Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day in an undisclosed role. With Cretton at the helm, the film is set to start rolling cameras later this year to make thea Jul. 31, 2026 release date. Colón-Zayas will feature alongside Holland and Sink, while Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are expected to reprise their roles as MJ and Ned, respectively. Plot details remain scarce, but longtime producer Amy Pascal previously revealed that the film would follow Peter Parker deciding to focus on his superhero alter-ego instead of his personal life, which was upended in No Way Home.

“We have to deal with the fact that he decided he was going to give up being Peter Parker. And that he was going to focus on being Spider-Man because being Peter Parker was too hard. So that’s what the movie is about.”

The series promises to be a unique outing in the world of Marvel.

Although the report does not reveal who Colón-Zayas is playing, a recent rumor suggests that Sony and Marvel Studios have found the villain for the film. Brand New Day has reportedly eyed an actress between the ages of 30 and 50 to play the primary antagonist in the MCU sequel. At 52 years old, Colón-Zayas seems poised to take on the rumored part, even though it is unclear who the villain could be. Of course, nothing has been confirmed thus far, and there is a chance that Colón-Zayas is playing someone else entirely. The Spider-Man film has also been on the lookout for actors to play teachers for Brand New Day, so perhaps Colón-Zayas is playing a mentor of sorts for Peter Parker.
MCU Rumors Point to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Adapting This Comic Storyline

Hulu

As of right now, it is hard to pinpoint exactly which direction Spider-Man: Brand New Day is headed. This is especially true since Jon Watts, who directed the MCU trilogy, departed the fourth film and was replaced by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton. Before Cretton signed on, rumors floated around the internet that the sequel would be another multiversal adventure, this time featuring Tom Hardy as Venom. There is a chance that the alien symbiote is involved, but as of right now, it seems Cretton is going in a new direction. Among the recent chatter surrounding the film is speculation that Brand New Day not only adapts the comic the title is inspired by, but could also be an ode to Spider-Island.
The Brand New Day comic saw Peter Parker’s world turned upside down in the immediate aftermath of the controversial One More Day arc. In addition to losing Mary Jane (for what seemed like the millionth time), Peter had to work his way back into becoming Spider-Man again. The story heavily featured Harry Osborn, who could make his MCU debut in the new sequel. However, another possible inspiration for Cretton’s film might be Spider-Island, which followed people on Manhattan Island gaining Spider-Man-like powers. A twist on this could feature variants of the hero from different universes, lending credence to the belief that Andrew Garfield will return as Spider-Man.
