Carl Weathers’ Death Prompts FanDuel to Adjust Super Bowl LVIII Ad Campaign

Feb 6, 2024

Summary

FanDuel is “adjusting” their Super Bowl LVXIII campaign featuring Carl Weathers following the actor’s death. Weathers was an iconic talent with a profound impact on and off the screen. FanDuel’s original ad features Weathers and four-time Super Bowl champion Rob Gronkowski.

Following the death of The Mandalorian co-star Carl Weathers, FanDuel revealed their intention to adjust their Super Bowl LVXIII campaign featuring the late actor. The online gambling company made the announcement after learning that Weathers passed away in his sleep at the age of 76. FanDuel said in a statement posted to their official X, formerly Twitter, account. The post reads as follows:

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Carl Weathers. Throughout his life, Carl was an iconic talent who had a profound impact on the people he worked with on and off the screen. FanDuel was fortunate to have had an opportunity to work with him during our Super Bowl campaign. We are adjusting our campaign accordingly out of respect for the family during their time of grief.”

Fan Duel’s Super Bowl LVXIII commercial, which reveals Weathers riding up on a motorcycle near the end, also features the four-time Super Bowl champ, Rob Gronkowski. The former tight end was also a five-time Pro Bowler. But, as the Fan Duel ad points out, Gronkowski is excellent at catching the football, but not so great when it comes to kicking the pigskin. Check out Fan Duel’s original concept for their Gronkowski and Weathers collaboration below:

Unfortunately, FanDuel does not specify how the company intends to modify their Super Bowl LVXIII campaign and the Carl Weathers ad that is titled the Kick of Destiny 2. Whether Weathers’ part will be cut back, or if the actor will be omitted from the commercial altogether, wasn’t revealed in the social media announcement. Obviously, Weathers is best known for portraying boxer Apollo Creed in the Rocky film franchise, which led to a number of high-profile jobs for the thespian, particularly in the action genre.

In 1987, Weathers got to portray the bad guy, Dillon, in the sci-fi action film, Predator. Although Dillon eventually finds redemption, it comes a little late, as the alien predator (Kevin Peter Hall) kills Weathers’ character before going toe-to-toe with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Dutch. A year later, Weathers portrayed the titular hero in Action Jackson. But what some fans might not remember is that Weathers has some wonderful comedic credits attached to his body of work.

Weathers portrayed Adam Sandler’s mentor, Chubbs Peterson, in 1996’s Happy Gilmore. And for those fans who have never seen the classic comedy, but they still wonder why Chubbs walks around with one wooden hand, check out an unforgettable clip from the film below:

In 2004, Weathers played himself on Arrested Development, and the actor returned for appearances in seasons two and four. Weathers was always ready and willing to eat, while on-screen during the comedy series, and he even teased Tobias (David Cross) with making a stew, “baby.” Check out Weathers flexing his comedic muscles below:

Modern-day audiences are probably most familiar with Weathers’ work on The Mandalorian, which is available to stream on Disney+ at the time of this writing. The actor appeared as Greef Karga in all three seasons of the Star Wars show.
