Chapter 4’ Cuts Through Streaming Competition After Exciting ‘John Wick 5’ Updates

May 21, 2025

One of the biggest movie announcements of the year thus far came at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, when Lionsgate confirmed that John Wick 5 was officially in the works with both star Keanu Reeves and director Chad Stahelski returning. Just a few weeks ago, Stahelski dropped an update on John Wick 5, speaking about how “different” the film will be from anything fans are accustomed to. Laurence Fishburne has also addressed his status in the film. These new updates have helped propel John Wick: Chapter 4 back into the limelight, where it currently sits at #3 on Peacock at the time of writing. John Wick 4 earned a “certified fresh” score of 94% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter also landed a “verified hot” 93% rating. It also grossed $440 million at the global box office.
Following the release of John Wick: Chapter 4 and the first spin-off, The Continental, the future of the franchise was up in the air. It seemed an obvious choice to keep things rolling, considering the increasing financial success and demand from fans, but there has to be a genuine story there for things to feel earned. We’re now less than a month away from Ballerina, the first spin-off film led by Ana de Armas, which will also see Reeves return as Wick. In addition to John Wick 5, Donnie Yen has also been tapped to star in and direct a spin-off film focused on his John Wick: Chapter 4 character, Caine. Mattson Tomlin (The Batman Part II) is writing the script for the film, which aims to begin shooting this summer in Hong Kong.
Is Winston John Wick’s Father?

One of the few stars to appear in all four John Wick movies — and even the upcoming Ballerina spin-off — is Winston, portrayed by Ian McShane. Winston is the manager of the New York City Continental Hotel, one of the many places frequented by members of the High Table to do business. Fans have begun to speculate that Winston could be John Wick’s father, but there has been no information provided in any John Wick project to date to prove this could be true. Winston is likely nothing more than an acquaintance of John Wick’s.
John Wick 5 does not have an official release date or window. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the film, and watch John Wick: Chapter 4 on Peacock.
