David Corenswet Reveals How He Deals With Superman Pressure in Wake of Henry Cavill, Christopher Reeve

Feb 19, 2025

Henry Cavil’s portrayal of Superman is regarded by many as one of the greatest superhero performances ever, on par with Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man. Naturally, filling his shoes as the DCU’s new Superman

is a monumental task for David Corenswet, who is set to offer Kal-El a fresh beginning in the shared universe.
The DC reboot begins with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, featuring a lineup of films already in the works, and Superman, written and directed by James Gunn, the mastermind behind the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, will kick things off. Following the decision to replace Henry Cavil with David Corenswet, many DC fans were initially disappointed that the long-running franchise had made such a brutal decision, but James Gunn had other plans when he released Superman’s official trailer, which garnered a positive response from viewers. Similarly, Corenswet seems to be handling the burden of filling Cavil’s shoes fairly well.
In a recent interview with GQ Italia, the actor opened up about what it’s like to lead such a highly anticipated film and how he deals with the immense pressure of portraying one of the most powerful characters in fiction. Instead of letting outside opinions sway him, the Pearl actor remains optimistic about the outcome. He stated:

“I focus on doing my best for the director, the crew and my colleagues who have worked at the top of their abilities for months or years. If I do well for them, I think I’ve done everything possible.”

We should expect nothing less from someone taking on the role of Kal-El, especially since Henry Cavil’s portrayal of Superman remains iconic. In fact, Corenswet underwent a massive physical transformation in order to fit into the role of Superman, reportedly gaining 40 pounds of muscle. In another interview with the same publication, Paolo Mascitti, Corenswet’s personal trainer, shared specifics about the rigorous training regimen the actor followed to fulfill James Gunn’s vision. In his words,

“This is a James Gunn film, and he has a very specific vision for the whole project. David has probably gone from a little over 200 pounds to about 240, but he’ll lose weight as he continues to define his muscles. James Gunn is extraordinary at selecting people, and this boy from Philadelphia was born to be Superman. You can ask any member of the cast or crew, David is the nicest guy ever and is basically the perfect Superman.”

James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Could Be the Fresh Start the DC Universe Needs

Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which meticulously built a string of successful movies over the years, DC has been inconsistent in establishing its own shared universe. From Zack Snyder’s Justice League to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy, individual films have been outstanding, but the DCU has failed to tell the comics’ lore in detail.
