Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Gets Divisive Tease by the Russo Brothers
Walt Disney Studios
Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to shoot back-to-back alongside Secret Wars, will follow Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. Fans have long speculated that the actor will be playing a variant of Tony Stark, the role that made him the MCU’s most iconic and prominent figure. Although the Russo Brothers did not outright confirm it, they came out and revealed that there is no one other than Downey Jr. that can portray the upcoming villain role.
“We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story, But there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to.”
MCU diehards have waited a long time for Doctor Doom to get a comic-accurate, committed portrayal on the big screen. If he turns out to be a variant of Tony Stark, who happens to be Latverian or something, that wants to reset the universe in his own vision, it will be a divisive creative decision that could make or break the Avengers sequels. Of course, there is no official indication that Downey Jr. is actually playing another version of Tony Stark, but it’s hard not to see how Marvel Studios could lean hard into nostalgia after an uneven Multiverse Saga.
