Elizabeth Holmes, the imprisoned founder of Theranos who duped investors with a claim to have revolutionized blood testing and was sentenced to more than 11 years for fraud, will reportedly be moved from a Texas prison to a halfway house in 2027.

On Wednesday, ABC News reported that Holmes is scheduled to be placed in the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle, Texas, on Aug. 23, 2027. The network cited an update from the Department of Justice’s Victim Notification System.

Holmes, who is being held at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in southern Texas, has had her original sentence reduced by one year. She was convicted in 2022 on multiple charges of conspiracy to defraud investors and wire fraud related to the now-defunct company she founded in 2003. The sentence reduction stems from a March order by U.S. District Judge Edward Davila under a retroactive sentencing guidelines change, plus First Step Act credit.

Known for her strikingly deep, husky baritone voice and uniform black wardrobe, Holmes was a Silicon Valley icon as the proprietary technology Theranos said it invented was primed to disrupt modern medicine. But a 2015 Wall Street Journal investigation found that Theranos’ proprietary technology was a ruse, and only a dozen of the hundreds of tests it offered were actually being performed. In fact, the company relied on third-party devices and traditional blood testing to perform what it said was its industry-shattering tech.

Following the company’s decline, Holmes went from Silicon Valley wunderkind to the epitome of a “fake it till you make it” mentality that permeated the tech industry.

Halfway houses, such as the one Holmes will enter upon her exit from prison, are supervised environments for inmates as they near release, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons; they offer services like career counseling and financial management assistance as residents prepare to reenter society.

Since her downfall, Holmes has been the subject of multiple films and a television series. In 2019, HBO premiered the documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley; in March 2022, Hulu released The Dropout, a miniseries based on the podcast of the same name produced by ABC News in 2019.

Earlier this month, the Telluride Film Festival held a surprise screening of a documentary from Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim titled You Can See Everything; the film, which follows Holmes in the weeks before she began her prison sentence, received rave reviews. It is set to be released by A24 on Oct. 16.
