Emilio Rivera Talks ‘Mayans,’ The Evolution Of Marcus Alvarez & What To Expect In Season 5 [Templo Talk]
May 18, 2023
The final season of “Mayans M.C.” is fast approaching (next week, in fact), and we thought we’d celebrate the end of one of the best shows on TV with a brand-new weekly podcast. Welcome to Templo Talk: A Mayans M.C. Podcast. In this episode, we kick things off with a full recap of the first four seasons of “Mayans M.C.” and how the show evolved from a run-of-the-mill “Sons of Anarchy” spinoff to one of the most daring and beautifully crafted shows on TV.

In addition to the recap, we’re highlighting a new interview that was conducted with Emilio Rivera, who plays Marcus Alvarez in the series. What better way to kick off this podcast than with the man who is largely responsible for introducing fans to the Mayans way back during ‘SOA’ and continues to be a powerful force in ‘Mayans?’
In our discussion, we talk about what makes “Mayans M.C.” such a special show, especially under the creative purview of Elgin James, writer, director, and showrunner of the series.

“Elgin is amazing. What a storyteller he is,” said Rivera. “And you know what it is? He listens to us. He listens to what we have to say. I can see things that I have said, or someone else has said, incorporated into the story. That’s a smart writer. And it makes it easier, for us actors, to put in the work. It’s a beautiful thing.”
We also discuss the evolution of Marcus Alvarez over the course of ‘Sons’ and now ‘Mayans,’ and how the depth given to the character makes him much more interesting as a character than just being a typical criminal that you might see on TV in various other series.
“Outlaws and criminals don’t know they’re outlaws and criminals. They’re just human beings doing different things,” he explained. “It’s a beautiful thing because even though the hardest guy is going to cry. The hardest guy is going to cry when his mother passes away or when he loses a kid. And then there are goody-two-shoes who are criminals in different ways. So what is a real criminal?”
