Green Lantern Series Confirmed as Part of DCU, Will Be in the Vein of True Detective

Apr 21, 2023

After years of waiting, the Green Lanterns will light again in the DCU, with James Gunn and Peter Safran revealing details of the revamped serial project. Described as being akin to the HBO series True Detective, Lanterns will follow two of the most known members of the Green Lantern corps, Hal Jordan and John Stewart, as they unite to uncover a mystery that could have major implications on the universe.

“It is more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two Lanterns. [A] terrestrial-based mystery,” Safran explained. James Gunn then chimed in, revealing that the tale of Lanterns will play a crucial role in shaping the DCU on both the big and small screens.

“Leads into the overall story that we’re telling throughout the different, different movies and television shows. And we find this Ancient Horror on Earth. And these guys are basically, you know, super cops on precinct Earth.”

A Green Lantern series has been in development for some time, and has gone through various iterations. While the show was at one stage due to follow the likes of Alan Scott, Guy Gardner, and Jessica Cruz, things have clearly changed quite dramatically, with Gunn and Safran deciding instead to center the series on the two best-recognized members of the Green Lanterns. But was this the right decision?

The Superman Reboot Will Kick Off the DCU

DC Comics

We now know a surprising amount about what projects will be included in the first chapter of the rebooted DCU. The franchise will begin with Superman movie, Superman: Legacy, which Peter Safran has revealed will focus “on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

After kicking things off with such a major player, the DCU will take things a little more low-key with its next project, The Authority. Based by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch, The Authority will tell a very different kind of superhero story, according to James Gunn. “Yeah, this is a big movie and I don’t know how many of you know are familiar with The Authority,” the filmmaker and co-CEO of DC Studios began. “The Authority is a very different kind of superhero story. They are basically good intention, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments, whatever they want to do to make the world better. And we’ll see how that journey goes for them. But as I said earlier, there’s morally gray characters of which these are.”

If that were not already enough to get your excitement levels surging, the first part of the DCU will also include the Batman project The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, a Wonder Woman prequel series titled Paradise Lost, and a Booster Gold-fronted series.

Superman: Legacy is now scheduled for release on July 11, 2025.
