HBO Orders A Season Of Sam Mendes’ Superhero Filmmaking Satire Starring Himesh Patel & Aya Cash

Aug 9, 2023

We’ve already reached a point in the evolution of superhero filmmaking where the tropes of the genre have been deconstructed with projects like “The Boys” and “Watchmen.” Now, the very process of making superhero films is being dissected in the upcoming series, “The Franchise.”

According to HBO, the premium network has ordered a full season of the forthcoming comedy, “The Franchise.” The series is said to explore the behind-the-scenes hijinks that go into the creation of a cinematic universe, a la the MCU. However, if that seems a bit dull, never fear! You see, one of the creators of the show is none other than Armando Iannucci, the man behind “Veep.” So, you can just imagine that this is going to be a good time.
Here’s the synopsis for the series:
The crew of an unloved franchise movie fight for their place in a savage and unruly cinematic universe. THE FRANCHISE shines a light on the secret chaos inside the world of superhero moviemaking, to ask the question — how exactly does the cinematic sausage get made? Because every f*ck-up has an origin story.
Not only is Iannucci involved in the series, but the pilot is set to be directed by Sam Mendes. We first heard of Mendes’ involvement in “The Franchise” last summer. Jon Brown is the writer of the pilot and showrunner for the series. The series is expected to star Himesh Patel, Aya Cash, Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, Isaac Powell, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Brühl.
Obviously, with the SAG and WGA strikes ongoing, it’s unclear when this might enter production. However, when it does finally get to HBO, “The Franchise” will be one of the most anticipated series.
