Heath Ledger’s $65 Million Historical Rom-Com Is a Free Streaming Hit
Jan 12, 2026
Heath Ledger’s passing is one of the biggest tragedies in Hollywood history, especially considering how many classics the talented star gave the world before he died. One of the most underrated movies of his career is A Knight’s Tale, the 2001 historical epic following a peasant squire who creates a new identity for himself as a knight following the death of his master. The film co-stars Mark Addy (Game of Thrones) and Paul Bettany (WandaVision), and it’s currently streaming on both Hulu and Tubi in America. It’s even in the top 10 on the latter streaming service, which is available to all internet users for free. A Knight’s Tale wasn’t kindly received by critics at the time of release, but the film has become something of a cult classic in the years since it first arrived in theaters. Its Rotten Tomatoes scores of 59% from critics and 79% from audiences aren’t anything to boast about, but the film was successful at the box office, grossing $117 million against a $65 million budget. Fans of A Knight’s Tale are sure to enjoy Game of Thrones; the former is based much more in romance, but the historical setting is sure to please all who enjoy the older period of history. Brian Helgeland wrote and directed A Knight’s Tale, which also stars Rufus Sewell and Alan Tudyk. Helgeland has only directed four movies in the 25 years since A Knight’s Tale hit theaters. He reunited with Ledger and Addy two years later for The Order, a mystery thriller that’s not currently on streaming, and it wasn’t until 10 years later that he worked with the late Chadwick Boseman on 42. In 2015, he directed Tom Hardy’s Legend, and three years ago, he directed the Paramount+ original, Finestkind.
What Was Heath Ledger’s Last Movie?
Heath Ledger gave his final performance in 20090’s The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, the dark fantasy movie starring Christopher Plummer that’s currently streaming for free on Tubi. His second-to-last performance is easily his most notable, though. Ledger played The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s second Batman movie, The Dark Knight. He gave such a forceful performance that it’s still talked about to this day, and he even won a posthumous Oscar for his work in the film. Ledger died in January 2008, and The Dark Knight came out later that year in July.
Be sure to check out A Knight’s Tale for free on Tubi in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
