Adam Scott Thought He’d Never Land His ‘Severance’ Role When Ben Stiller First Called
May 4, 2026
While Adam Scott is no stranger to entertainment fans, he has had an impressive resurgence in the industry over the last decade. He has also found massive success in the TV sphere, first coming into the national spotlight with his role as Ben Wyatt in nearly 100 episodes of NBC’s hit sitcom Parks & Recreation. In more recent years, he enjoyed a short nine-episode stint on Apple TV’s Loot, and he even got to play a fictionalized version of himself on the hit Emmy-winning The Studio (also shown on Apple TV), but that does not even take into account what may be the biggest hit of his career. Starting in 2022, Scott started an incredible run in Apple TV’s Severance, playing the leading role of Marc Scout in the show’s first two seasons. Set in a world where “severance” surgery splits memories into two categories (“innie” while at work and “outie” while away from work), this sci-fi psychological thriller follows the employees of Lumon industry and the dark consequences of their extreme work-life balance practices. Scott’s Mark Scout is a former history professor and a severed worker for Lumon Industries, who is eventually promoted to be the head of the Macrodata Refinement Department when his story begins. While Scott is now widely celebrated for his leading role in this series, recent quotes indicate that he was not even sure if it would happen. Speaking with Kid Cudi on the Big Bro with Kid Cudi podcast, Severance star Adam Scott discussed his feelings on getting the role of Marc Scout in the series. After executive producer Ben Stiller told him about the idea for the show in 2017, Scott was enthralled by the idea, but he felt he would “never actually get this role” and told himself that it was “too good” to be true:
“I’ll never actually get this role. This is too good. Like, there’s no way I’ll actually get to do this.”
Apple TV
Looking at Severance, Scott’s presence in this show has only added to its quality, as it has become one of Apple TV’s most successful series ever. Having ranked as one of the streamer’s top 10 shows for most of its run during the last three years, it has also earned massive critical wins along with those impressive viewing numbers. Individually, Scott has earned nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in both seasons, giving him a defining role for his career with his portrayal of Marc Scout. Looking forward, Scott is expected to continue this run of dominance in Severance for Season 3, which is expected to begin filming later in 2026 ahead of a likely 2027 release. While details about the new season have not been revealed, Scott has read what will happen and has already teased plenty of surprises in store for the next set of episodes.
The first two seasons of Severance are now streaming on Apple TV.
