Honor Among Thieves 2 Is Still Possible On 1 Condition, Says Paramount CEO

Jul 31, 2023

Summary

Paramount CEO Brian Robbins teases that a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves isn’t off the table just yet. The movie earned positive reviews from critics but underperformed at the box office. Robbins emphasizes that the key condition for a sequel is finding a way to make it for less money.

A Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves sequel gets a promising update from Paramount CEO Brian Robbins, who teases that it might still happen on one condition. Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves serves as an adaptation of the beloved table-top role-playing game. The film was released in theaters earlier this year to strong reviews, but it underperformed at the box office, ending its theatrical run with only $208 million on a $150 million budget.

Now, in a recent interview with Variety, Robbins reveals that Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves 2 isn’t actually off the table, despite the first movie losing money. If a sequel does happen, the CEO reveals that there’s one condition that must be met: “We’ve got to figure out a way to make it for less.”

Honor Among Thieves Deserves A Sequel (Despite Its Box Office)

The first time Dungeons & Dragons was adapted into a movie in 2000, the results were less than stellar. The film was lambasted by critics and ended its box office run with a meager $33.8 million on a budget of $45 million. Despite the film’s commercial failure and the fact that it doesn’t really honor the game in any meaningful way, it was followed by two lackluster sequels, the latter of which was released direct-to-DVD in 2012. The game, then, despite remaining incredibly popular, had not previously been done justice on the big screen.

By contrast, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, which sits at an impressive 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, feels like a love letter to the game. From the different character classes to the locations to the monsters, the latest adaptation has plenty for game-players to love, and even includes some fun Easter eggs. Crucially, however, the film also remains accessible to non-players, striking a perfect balance between honoring the game while also welcoming newcomers.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has plenty of bombastic, CGI-heavy, fantasy action sequences, but also really nails it when it comes to comedy. The film’s humor, which is reminiscent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, might actually be key to making a prospective sequel work. To keep the budget down, a sequel to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves could potentially curtail the big action set pieces somewhat while doubling down on the comedy that works so well in the first film.
