I’m Stunned That They Said No To A Billion Dollar Franchise

May 7, 2024

Summary

Chris Pine expresses surprise over DC’s decision to prioritize new projects instead of Wonder Woman 3, which was canceled by DC Studios.
The DCEU has been largely laid to rest, and Wonder Woman 3 along with it, paving the way for the new DC Universe.
Still, Pine feels there is unclear reasoning behind pivoting away from the popular character, who is not part of the DCU’s plans at all.

Steve Trevor actor Chris Pine chimes in on the new DC Universe being prioritized over Wonder Woman 3 after the DC sequel got canceled. As James Gunn’s DC Universe is moving forward, multiple heroes and villains are getting reimagined for DC Studios’ new continuity. While plans are in motion for new Superman and Batman projects, Wonder Woman’s place in the DC Universe has yet to be determined, outside of Paradise Lost, a prequel TV show that is in the works for Max.

In a new interview with Business Insider, Pine, who was part of the Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 cast, decided to open up about Gunn’s DC Universe going forward rather than proceeding with Wonder Woman 3. While Pine has previously stated that he is not interested in returning to either the Marvel or DC Universes, he shared the following thoughts:

I’m stunned that they said no to a billion-dollar franchise and decided to pivot elsewhere. I don’t know what the reasoning was behind that; it’s above my pay grade, but Wonder Woman is an incredible character; Patty is such a thoughtful director.

Why Wonder Woman 3 Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore
The DC Universe Is Kicking Off A New Era For DC Characters On Film And TV

While time will tell how Wonder Woman fits into the Chapter 1, “Gods and Monsters” slate, there are fewer reasons than ever for Wonder Woman 3 to happen. The further away they get from the DCEU’s conclusion, the less sense it makes to pursue Wonder Woman 3, even if it is just to wrap up the trilogy for Diana Prince. It’s key to take into account that even though Wonder Woman 1984 led to Wonder Woman 3 getting greenlit, the 2020 installment wasn’t well-received compared to the first film.

Since the entire Justice League cast from the DCEU movie timeline isn’t coming back, there is less incentive to invest time into Wonder Woman 3 with Gal Gadot. Despite the Elseworlds option still existing under DC Studios, if Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t pursuing it for the other Justice League actors, it wouldn’t make a lot of sense for the studio to use that concept for Wonder Woman 3. It’s also clear that Gadot has also moved on from the Wonder Woman role, as she is working on other projects.

It’s also worth taking into account that Gadot’s numerous Wonder Woman cameos in some of the recent DCEU movies didn’t necessarily show there being a lot of interest in Wonder Woman 3. At this point, it is better to look forward to Gunn’s plans for Wonder Woman, which he will ideally reveal in the coming months. Hopefully, at the very least, Patty Jenkins will open up at some point about what Wonder Woman 3 would have been if the film had happened.

Wonder Woman 3’s Confusing Cancelation Explained

The timeline for Wonder Woman 3 has been confusing, to say the least, over the last two years. It started in December 2022, when it was reported that Wonder Woman 3 was no longer moving forward due to Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. Reports initially stated that Wonder Woman 3″did not fit in with the new plans,” with Jenkins coming out on X (formerly known as Twitter) to clear up an inaccurate report that she had walked away from the threequel.

Though that appeared to be the end of Diana’s film series, Gadot later made matters far more confusing when she suddenly revealed in an interview in August 2023 that Wonder Woman 3 was happening after all, supposedly as part of the new DC Universe. Despite claiming that she had met with Gunn and Safran, it would later be reported that same month that DC Studios was not developing Wonder Woman 3 in any capacity. It’s still unclear what was said in the conversation between her, Gunn and Safran that it ended with her believing Wonder Woman 3 had been resurrected, but the movie is currently not moving forward.

In the end, the complicated Wonder Woman 3 timeline will always serve as one of the more comedic stories in the superhero movie world. How there was this much miscommunication about Wonder Woman 3 only indicates, even more, how complex the DCEU had become at that point. As the DCEU has been put to rest, including Wonder Woman 3, time will tell what the DC Universe will do with the Amazon heroine under Gunn and Safran.

Wonder Woman 3 Wonder Woman 3 is the third film in Warner Bros.’ franchise starring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince. There was initially confusion about whether the sequel would happen after the DC began its soft reboot under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran. However, in August 2023, Gadot confirmed that the sequel was moving forward.Studio(s) DC Films Distributor(s) Warner Bros. Pictures
