James Gunn Offers Exciting Update About His New Superman Movie On DC Hero’s 85th Anniversary

Apr 22, 2023

On the 85th anniversary of the Man of Steel, James Gunn reveals some new exciting updates about the Superman: Legacy movie. As the DCEU is coming to an end, DC Studios is prepping its new DC Universe with Gunn and Peter Safran. The project that will truly kick off the new DC Universe is Superman: Legacy, which will serve as a reboot for the Last Son of Krypton. Gunn is officially attached as the writer and director for Superman: Legacy, which is arriving in 2025.

At the time of this story’s publication, it’s the 85th anniversary of Superman, as Action Comics #1 was released on this day. To join in on the celebration, Gunn shared an exciting update for Superman: Legacy as he revealed it is officially entering pre-production.

Gunn shared how honored he is to be part of the Man of Steel’s larger legacy as he gets to tell Superman’s next cinematic story. The filmmaker did confirm in a comment on Instagram that no casting news is to be expected on the 85th anniversary.

What James Gunn’s Latest Update Means For His Superman Movie

With Gunn making this announcement for Superman: Legacy, it does mean a number of things for the upcoming DC Universe installment. To begin with, they have started working on costumes for Superman. Legacy in the midst of the audition process. That likely means that even though they have yet to cast their new Clark Kent, an idea likely exists already for the latest version of the Superman suit.

But the new Superman suit isn’t the only thing that Gunn seems to be already working on for his reboot. The post also included that they are working on “production design,” which would include the visual looks for Superman: Legacy. That could include anything from location scouting to logos for The Daily Planet and the Kryptonian language. Since they are targeting a 2025 release date, principal photography is likely not happening until the end of the year or 2024.

With Superman: Legacy in the pre-production stages, time will tell how long the world has to wait to learn who will be the new Man of Steel. Still, Gunn’s latest update is definitely something to get excited about as he and DC Studios get closer to launching the new DC Universe. Hopefully, it won’t be long until Superman: Legacy taps its titular lead, with an announcement perhaps coming at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.
