James Gunn Reveals Exciting Superman Reboot Trailer Details
Oct 28, 2024
Our first proper look at the DC Universe’s new Superman is moving closer and closer as DC Studios’ co-president and director James Gunn has teased fans with a production update. The movie will kickstart the new DCU’s cinematic outings, after Creature Commandos officially jump starts the new universe when it hits Max this December. Plot details have been kept tightly under wraps, but the new film features a star-studded cast, including David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), Milly Alcock (Supergirl), Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Wendell Pierce (Perry White), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) and so, so many more. Production wrapped on the movie this July, and fans are now desperate to get their hands on the first trailer.
Taking to Threads (where else would James Gunn give a DC Studios update?), Gunn confirmed that he’s hard at work on the first trailer for Superman. When asked by a fan if the trailer is completed, the filmmaker responded with a brief-but-promising:
“It’s not. I worked on it this weekend.”
While the news may come as a disappointment to some who cannot contain their excitement about the new film, Gunn is characteristically taking his time with the project to ensure the highest quality. When production wrapped in July, Gunn addressed the film’s long post-production window, saying he wanted to give the VFX artists enough time to get everything right.
At New York Comic Con earlier this month, Gunn also addressed Superman’s trailer. His statement gave fans more to work with as to the timeframe for Superman’s trailer. “We’re deep in the process of editing,” the director said during the panel for Creature Commandos. Gunn also went on to praise David Corenswet’s performance as Clark Kent/Superman, saying he’s “going to blow people the f*ck away.” Finally, the director teased the audience about the trailer, saying:
“It won’t be too long before we see a trailer, but also it won’t be soon.”
Superman Will Introduce Countless DC Comics Heroes
While modern comic book movies seem more focused on introducing and setting up the next 10 spin-offs and sequels over telling a good story, James Gunn’s comic book movies have, to date, been pretty self-contained. While Guardians of the Galaxy eventually branched out into a trilogy, each movie works really well as a standalone entity, as does Gunn’s DC debut, The Suicide Squad.

That’s why fans were confused and concerned when Gunn announced which characters would appear in Superman — it would be quicker to list the heroes that don’t appear in the film. Fans are concerned that Gunn’s DCU movie debut contains too many comic book heroes, and that the film might veer away from telling a great standalone story in favor of setting up the DCU’s first phase, ‘Gods & Monsters.’ However, the director’s long-time fans are trusting the process. It appears that James Gunn is ripping his DC Universe right out of the pages of the beloved comic books, setting it in a world where superheroes and villains are a frequent part of life, and popular (and underappreciated) heroes will bounce in and out of different projects.
Written and directed by James Gunn, Superman is the first movie in Warner Bros.’ rebooted DC Universe to center around the titular comic book hero. It introduces a new version of the Man of Steel after Henry Cavill’s departure from the role, honoring the character’s roots as “the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way.”Release Date July 11, 2025 Cast David Corenswet , Rachel Brosnahan , María Gabriela De Faría , Edi Gathegi , Nicholas Hoult , Frank Grillo , Nathan Fillion , Milly Alcock , Sara Sampaio , Pruitt Taylor Vince , Skyler Gisondo , Anthony Carrigan , Wendell Pierce , Beck Bennett , Sean Gunn Expand
