Latest Superman Casting Rumors Debunked by James Gunn, Logan Lerman Not Being Considered
Jul 30, 2023
Director and co-chief of DC Studios, James Gunn, has emerged to once again debunk ongoing rumors regarding the casting of the Man of Steel for his upcoming reboot, Superman: Legacy. Whispers have been circulating social media lately claiming that Bullet Train and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief star Logan Lerman was being courted for the role of Clark Kent/Superman, but Gunn has arrived to reveal this is not the case.
Taking to social media (where Gunn has quickly debunked all sorts of rumors recently), the filmmaker revealed that, not only has he not spoken with Lerman about a role in Superman: Legacy, but he doesn’t even know who he is. Of course, this was not meant as a dig at the actor, something that Gunn clarified.
Understandbly, simply being a director does not mean you suddenly know the names of every working actor that exists, but the fact Gunn does not know who Logan Lerman is the only proof we really need that the Fury star is not in contention for the role of Superman in Superman: Legacy.
Gunn went even further in an attempt to clear things up, revealing that he and his fellow DC Studios chief Peter Safran “Haven’t had a single talk with a single actor about the role. Just making private lists, prepping material for auditions.”
There are currently several fan-favorite casting choices for the new Superman, including Pearl and We Own This City star David Corenswet, Yes, God, Yes and Assassination Nation actor Wolfgang Novogratz, and Euphoria star Jacob Elordi, and while it could end up being one of them…maybe…it sounds like Gunn and Safran are still very early in the casting process.

Superman: Legacy is Due to Land in Theaters in 2025
DC Comics
One thing we do now know about Superman: Legacy is that Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn will both write and helm the project. “Yes, I’m directing Superman: Legacy to be released on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date he started to cry. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s Dad’s birthday.’ I hadn’t realized,” Gunn said in a series of tweets. “It has been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago — I initially said no because I didn’t have a way in that felt unique and fun and emotional that gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then a bit less than a year ago I saw a way in, in many ways centering around Superman’s heritage — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents inform who he is and the choices he makes.”
A synopsis for Superman: Legacy has since followed and reads, “Superman Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy is scheduled for release on July, 11, 2025, and will be the first part of the new (and hopefully improved) DCU. The Superman reboot will be followed by the superhero team-up flick The Authority, a Batman project titled The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing reboot, a Wonder Woman prequel series titled Paradise Lost, the animated series Creature Commandos, a series centered on Amanda Waller, a Green Lantern series titled Lanterns, and a series about Booster Gold.
