Lucasfilm Announces Season Two Is In Development
Jan 9, 2024
Well, the world of Lucasfilm just got a lot clearer. “The Mandalorian” season four? Nope, as we just reported, instead, Jon Favreau will be directing a movie tentatively titled, for now, “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” That’s a surprise movie because previously, we only knew of three movies in the works: one from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (‘The Jedi Order’ film with Rey), one from James Mangold (the ‘Dawn Of the Jedi’ about the origins of the Jedi, and one from Dave Filoni (presumed to be “Heir To The Empire” which will be the finale of all the Disney+ stories with the Mandalorian on the big screen). But what about Filoni’s “Ahsoka” series, a spin-off from “The Mandalorian” series?

Well, in their press release announcing “The Mandalorian & Grogu” film, Lucasfilm also announces that development on an “Ahsoka” season two is in the works. Fioni created it and wrote all of season one, so presumably, he’ll be just as involved. This isn’t maybe a huge surprise given that “Ahsoka” season one ended on a cliffhanger, stranding Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) stranded on the planet Peridea in another galaxy while Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi), reunited with Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and the droid Chopper, his former “Star Wars: Rebels” pals in the regular “Star Wars” galaxy (got that? Though we did not love it in the end).
This all makes sense as “Ahoska” essentially needs more set-up time to conclude its storyline before the final event series movie (likely Filoni’s “Heir To The Empire”) that’ll tie the events of “The Mandalorian & Grogu” and basically all the Disney+ shows.
Right now, Lucasfilm has three “Star Wars” movies on the calendar, two of them for 2026 and one for 2027, and they’ll have to pencil in another date since now there are four movies.
In 2024, Lucasfilm has said they are releasing two live-action shows, “Skeleton Key” from filmmaker Jon Watts and “The Acoylyte” from filmmaker Leslye Headland, and then two more animated shows (“The Bad Batch” and another ‘Jedi’ animated show for kids). Watts’s “Skeleton Key” will be set in the ‘Mandalorian’ timeline, so it could eventually connect with “Ahsoka,” but “The Acoylyte” is established years prior and thought to be more of a one-off and or something that will exist in a much earlier timeline.
No dates for any TV have been set, but the way things are going, the earliest we’ll get an “Ashoka” season two will likely be sometime in 2025. As for Tony Gilroy’s “Andor” season two, that also now looks like it’ll only be ready by 2025, given Lucasfilm’s recent release date schedule.
Here’s a vague Lucasfilm schedule based on all the information we know now.
