Luke Combs, Tracy Chapman, Morgan Wallen Score ACM Award Nominations
Apr 10, 2024
“Fast Car” continues to drive Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman to the top — this time, at the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards.
Combs is the top contender this year with eight nominations, competing for entertainer of the year as well as single and song of the year with “Fast Car.” He shares the latter nomination with Chapman, who wrote the song alone and had major success with it in 1988, 35 years before Combs brought new life to the track and made it a country hit.
Chapman won in the same category at last year’s Country Music Association Awards, becoming the first Black person to do so. She and Combs earned praise for teaming up for a live performance of the song at February’s Grammy Awards, where Combs was nominated for his version of the song; Chapman won two Grammys for her original version.
Combs could win his first ACM title for entertainer of the year at the May 16 event, which will stream live on Prime Video from Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas. His competition includes last year’s winner Chris Stapleton, Morgan Wallen, Jelly Roll, Lainey Wilson, Kane Brown and Cody Johnson. Combs’ other nominations include album of the year for Gettin’ Old, male artist of the year and music event of the year for “Different ‘Round Here” with Riley Green.
Wallen’s historic run on the pop and country charts helped him land behind Combs with six nominations. He’s up for album of the year with One Thing at a Time, which spent 18 weeks at No. 1 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart, and single of the year for the Grammy-nominated “Last Night,” which topped the all-genre Hot 100 chart for 16 weeks. Wallen is also competing for male artist of the year, artist-songwriter of the year and music event of the year with “Man Made A Bar” with Eric Church.
Breakthrough star Megan Moroney also scored six nominations — the most for a female act. She will compete for female artist of the year, song of the year and visual media of the year for “Tennessee Orange,” music event of the year for “Can’t Break Up Now” with Old Dominion and new female artist of the year.
Stapleton, Wilson and Johnson earned five nominations each, while Jelly Roll and Jordan Davis picked up four nods.
The announcement of this year’s ACM nominations came in the same week Beyoncé made history on the country music charts with Cowboy Carter. That album and songs from it will qualify at next year’s ACM Awards since this year’s eligibility period was Jan. 1, 2023 through Dec. 31.
