Made For the Big Screen

Aug 14, 2023

Based on a true story Gran Turismo tells the story of one young man who was so skilful at the Gran Turismo video game that he ended up becoming a real life racing phenomenon. Nick clement brings us is Gran Turismo IMAX review.

A player wins a series of Nissan-sponsored video game competitions through his gaming skills and becomes a real-life professional race car driver.
We were lucky enough to catch a sneak preview screening yesterday of the Gran Turismo movie. This film was my son’s number 1 movie to see for the summer and I’m happy to report that for me, it’s the surprise of the season. An absolutely powerhouse movie that was made for the big screen, a high-octane thrill ride from start to finish.

A thoroughly unpretentious slice of thrill-ride wish-fulfillment which tells the insane and mostly-true story of how a 19 year old bloke (Jann Mardenborough) went from being the best Gran Turismo video game player in the world, to a legit racing phenomenon.
This is perhaps the last film that one might expect sci-fi-loving director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium, Chappie) to take on, but he needed a gig, and he brought the hard-charging goods in return.

The solid screenplay by Jason Hall (American Sniper) and Zach Baylin (King Richard) hits all of the sports-movie tropes you’d expect, and yet the film is no less entertaining or compelling; simple yet effective storytelling with surprising emotional beats is the order of the day here.
Beautifully shot with a nimble camera by French cinematographer Jacques Jouffret (Mile 22) and expertly cut by Colby Parker Jr. (The Kingdom) and Austyn Daines, this great-looking film hugely benefits from Blomkamp’s forceful sense of visual urgency, and in tandem with his customary demand for pristine, photo-real CGI.

There’s nothing that looks artificial or out of place, especially during the two rip-roaring accident sequences, both of which are startlingly visceral and completely authentic-looking.
Archie Madekwe does a good job as the young gamer whose life is given a major twist, and scenery-chewing David Harbour and diet-sleazy Orlando Bloom were clearly having fun with their salty supporting roles.

This is the very definition of late summer programmer power and given our son’s very enthusiastic reaction, along with the rest of the crowd, I’d imagine that this is going to strike a chord with younger audiences when it drops in theaters on August 25th.
Put your pedal to the metal and make sure you see Gran Turismo in IMAX. This is a cinema offering that was built for the big screen blockbuster epics. Don’t expect to have fun in an IMAX cinema if you’re going to watch a Rom-Com.

IMAX demands big screen blockbuster movies, it demands high-octane action and immersive audio experiences that catapult you into the heart of the story. Visuals that push the capabilities of IMAX pristine imagery combined with Dolby Atmos surround sound.
Gran Turismo was made for this and there is absolutely no other way to watch this suprising pedal to the metal big screen experience.

Summary
High-Octane stuff! Gran Turismo is built for the big screen experience and you absolutely should oblige. It’s crazy to think that this is a true story and it has been told wonderfully!
