MCU Star Wants Disney+ Series On Captain America Returning Infinity Stones

Sep 30, 2024

Ross Marquand, who played Red Skull in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, hopes Chris Evans could return to the MCU for a new Disney+ series. Marquand took over the role from Hugo Weaving, who portrayed the iconic Captain America villain in Captain America: The First Avenger. Many fans assumed that Chris Evans was done with the MCU following Avengers: Endgame, which saw Cap go back in time to be with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). However, building off a rumor from May of this year, Marquand hopes that Evans could make a triumphant return in the future.

Appearing at Edmonton Expo (via @HollywoodHandle on X), Ross Marquand wants to see Chris Evans’ Captain America get his own Disney+ series. The show would not bring Cap back from the dead or show an alternate version of the character. Instead, it would show Captain America’s mission to return the infinity stones back to their rightful timelines, following the events of Endgame.

The same concept was rumored to be in development in May of this year. However, nothing has been confirmed by Marvel Studios or Chris Evans. It is unlikely that Chris Evans would return to helm a live-action Disney+ series, as the cost for Marvel Studios to hire the actor for a several-episode series would be extraordinary. However, in the vein of What If…? (which also saw Ross Marquand voice Red Skull), Evans could potentially voice an animated version of Captain America in a new series. Alternatively, the story concept could appear in the upcoming third season of What If…?.

Could Chris Evans Return to the MCU?

Avengers: Endgame felt like the natural conclusion for most of the core members of the team. Iron Man sacrificed himself to save half the galaxy, Black Widow sacrificed herself to give Hawkeye the soul stone, and Captain America sacrificed his time in the core timeline (there sure was a lot of sacrifice in Endgame) to return the infinity stones and be with Peggy Carter. While their character’s superhero mantels may live on — Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) has taken over as Captain America, and Marvel Studios are finally following through on the promise of their Ironheart series — Endgame felt like a natural retirement point for the core cast.

Robert Downey Jr. had to come back to play Doctor Doom and give every Marvel fan hope about their favorite Avengers actor returning in the future (Chris Hemsworth has already returned as Thor, but Love & Thunder is better left forgotten). Alongside the rumors of a Chris Evans-led Disney+ series, it was also rumored in May this year that Steve Rogers would appear in Avengers: Secret Wars. Much like the Disney+ show, this hasn’t been confirmed by anyone involved with Secret Wars, or by the actor himself.

While Evans may be done with the MCU, Captain America is still going strong. Anthony Mackie is about to lead his first standalone MCU movie in Captain America: Brave New World. The film follows up The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and sees Captain America face off against the Serpent Society, finally introducing Red Hulk to the MCU.

Captain America: Brave New World
releases in theaters on February 14, 2025.
