Marvel Studios’ revelation at this year’s CinemaCon introduced a small yet striking twist in the naming of its upcoming ensemble film, Thunderbolts*.
The addition of an asterisk, a typically mundane punctuation mark, sparked an unusual amount of intrigue among the event attendees. Kevin Feige, the maestro behind Marvel’s cinematic saga, unveiled the official title during the studio’s session at the event hosted by Walt Disney Pictures. The title’s peculiar feature, the asterisk, was first seen in a behind-the-scenes clip shared by Florence Pugh, a key star in the film. Marvel Studios later confirmed this styling in its official communications, cementing the asterisk’s intentional placement. Feige’s comments were brief but loaded with implications, saying:
“Yes, you’ll notice the asterisk on Thunderbolts*.
That is the official title of Thunderbolts* and we won’t talk more about that until after the movie comes out.

Feige’s statement, while withholding specifics, suggests a narrative twist or a significant thematic element tied to the symbol. Some fans theorize that it hints at a transitional phase for the team, possibly setting them up to evolve into the ‘Dark Avengers’, or another variant team within the MCU.
MCU Gathers Antiheroes and Redeemed Villains in Thunderbolts*
Drawing its core from the comic books, Thunderbolts* features a roster that includes some of Marvel’s most intriguing antiheroes and redeemed villains. The team is comprised of Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, a fiercely capable spy; Sebastian Stan’s haunted Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier; David Harbour as the robust and patriotic Red Guardian; and Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the enigmatic Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
They are joined by Wyatt Russell as John Walker, or U.S. Agent, whose patriotism walks a line between fervent and extreme; Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr, also known as Ghost, who can phase through objects; Olgya Kurylenko’s Taskmaster, skilled in mimicking opponents’ fighting styles; and the venerable Harrison Ford taking on the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross.

David Harbour, during an interview with ComicBook, likened the formation of the Thunderbolts to a fantasy scenario where disparate characters meet unexpectedly and must find common ground. Harbour said:
“I just made a joke about [how] it’s like Dungeons and Dragons, where you meet in a tavern and it’s like there’s a dwarf drinking a beer and then there’s like an elvish figure over there, we all come together and then there’s this ghost… it’s not gonna happen like that, I don’t think.”
“But I think that’s one of the mysteries of the movie is what is their relationship, and as you say, there is a lot of exciting things as you wrap up the next phase in terms of sort of what their part of the whole universe is in this random, chaotic way. So, you know, we can’t say too much at this point, but they’re an exciting introduction of this team together again, that’s going to be a lot of fun.”
Thunderbolts* Secure Release Amid Schedule and Casting Changes
Steven Yeun, previously rumored to be attached to the film as the character Sentry, has exited the project. Lewis Pullman, known for his role in Top Gun: Maverick, has been selected to replace Yeun. Yeun explained his reason for exit, stating:
“I think for me, time passing and things shifting kind of pulled me out of it,” Yeun explained. “But [director] Jake [Schreier], I know, is going to do an incredible job.”
Thunderbolts* has finally secured a release slot for May 2025. This follows a tumultuous period marked by several shifts in its release schedule and a delay in production, primarily due to last year’s industry-wide strikes.
