Netflix Sued Over Jake Paul-Mike Tyson Livestream Failures
Nov 22, 2024
As the saying goes, “This is why we can’t have nice things.” The highly publicized fight between influencer Jake Paul and heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson was meant to be a huge get for Netflix and its move to stream live sporting events, but the match was not without its problems. Due to the sheer number of subscribers trying to watch the event, Netflix experienced several technical glitches, and at least one user of the platform believes he’s owed some money for Netflix not running a smooth livestream.
Per Variety, Ronald “Blue” Denton is suing Netflix in Florida state court. The Hillsborough County, Florida resident is seeking an unspecified amount of monetary damages and class-action status on behalf of other Netflix subscribers, citing breach of contract, for being “woefully ill-prepared” for the demand associated with the Paul-Tyson fight. Denton deemed Netflix’s livestream “unwatchable,” with the lawsuit also accusing the streamer of deceptive trade practices.
Netflix did experience technical problems during the fight, which were widely shared by subscribers on social media in real-time. Given the fact that the event peaked at 65 million concurrent streams, with 38 million of those streams coming from the U.S., there were bound to be some streaming issues, but Denton is having none of it. Per his lawsuit, Denton exclaims, “60 million Americans were hyped to see ‘Iron Mike Tyson, ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’ versus YouTuber-turned-prizefighter Jake Paul. What they saw was ‘The Baddest Streaming on the Planet.'”
The Jake Paul-Mike Tyson Fight Was a Huge Success Despite the Glitches
Despite the complaints, the Paul-Tyson fight on Nov. 15 registered an estimated average per-minute audience of 108 million live viewers globally. It was the kind of match that would typically air on Pay-Per-View for a ridiculous amount of money, so the fact that all you needed was a Netflix account or a way to get around that pesky password-sharing crackdown was a big move for sporting events of this kind and could signal a change in how they’re consumed moving forward. That being said, ask fans of Love Is Blind what it’s like to livestream something highly anticipated on Netflix – the Season 4 reunion was so delayed that it didn’t premiere on the streamer until 19 hours after it was scheduled to stream live. It’s unclear if any lawsuits sprung up following the Love Is Blind debacle.
Related Mike Tyson Loses to Jake Paul but Netflix Users Were the Real Losers Glitching, slow loading, and not even being able to find the fight are just some problems Netflix users are reporting on social media.
Denton isn’t just speaking for himself, as his lawsuit makes it clear that over 100,000 people complained online about the glitches. He also claims that Netflix did a disservice to fans of the sport, with Denton’s lawsuit stating, “boxing fans, along with the average Americans wanting to see a legend in what would most likely be his last fight, were faced with legendary problems, including: no access, streaming glitches and buffering issues.”
There is a point to be made in Denton’s lawsuit that Netflix should be more prepared for things like this if it wishes to continue livestream events. Just this week, the streamer announced that Beyoncé would be performing the halftime show during its stream of the Texans-Ravens NFL game on Christmas day. If you think boxing fans were mad about streaming glitches, just watch out for The BeyHive if they can’t consume Beyoncé in all of her glory. Netflix, you’re officially on watch!
Netflix’s next live sporting event is the NFL Christmas Gameday two-fer that kicks off with the Chiefs vs. the Steelers at 1pm ET on Dec. 25.
