Netflix’s Sports Comedy ‘Running Point’ Is Still Hilarious but Starting to Get Repetitive in Season 2

May 2, 2026

Running Point had no right to be as excellent as it was when it released in 2025. Then again, it had the creative backing of the likes of Mindy Kaling, David Stassen, and Sal Saperstein himself, Ike Barinholtz. Plus, it brought together the all-star talents of Kate Hudson, Brenda Song, Max Greenfield, and Justin Theroux for a sports comedy loosely inspired by the life of Jeanie Buss, former CEO and current Governor of the Los Angeles Lakers. The series was a slam dunk for Netflix and quickly earned a renewal after its premiere. With anticipation high for the new season, there was skepticism about whether Running Point would be a one-hit wonder — but luckily, Season 2 is another hilarious, entertaining installment of this sports comedy.
What Is ‘Running Point’ Season 2 About?

Season 2 immediately picks up where the Season 1 finale left off. Cam (Theroux) is back from rehab, promising to play nice and let Isla (Hudson) remain president of the Waves. Unbeknownst to her, Cam is really angling to get his job back after seeing how much she was able to turn the team around in his absence. After a devastating playoff loss, Isla and her brothers have their eyes on the championship in the new season, and that means bringing in a new coach since Jay Brown (Jay Ellis) left for a coaching position in Boston, and even a new player. What initially made Running Point stand out was its blend of sharp humor with the world of professional sports that felt accessible and fun — not to mention the infusion of pop culture that offered a landing spot for non-sports fans. Season 2 only steps up its game in this regard. The writing team fires off one great line after another, mixing in contemporary references that feel fresh. On the sports front, Running Point does take cues from the real-life drama of the NBA, including its own version of the Los Angeles Lakers’ high-profile trade for Luka Dončić, which gives Scott MacArthur’s Ness a moment to shine.
‘Running Point’ Season 2 Trips Over Repetitive Storylines

For how strong the comedy is this season, Running Point Season 2 does rely on repetitive story beats, particularly when it comes to romance. Following their breakup in Season 1, Isla and Lev (Greenfield) get back together and actually set a date to get married, but as the wedding looms, the familiar patterns of their relationship rear their ugly head. Although this second round with Lev leads to some welcome introspection on Isla’s part, reviving her relationship with Lev feels unnecessary and frankly wastes precious minutes in the season. It’s not just Isla who seems a bit stuck in Season 2, as Sandy (Drew Tarver) also falls into a similar trap. After he spent much of Season 1 keeping his relationship with Charlie (Scott Evans) a secret, the world is let in on their home life after Charlie joins the cast of a new Lisa Rinna reality show. Tensions rise, despite the appeal of a future appearance on The Traitors. Later on, a promising new relationship, which feels like an opportunity to delve into homophobia in the NBA, becomes just another romance that ultimately comes and goes without any deeper meaning.

We can’t wait for more in Season 2!

Despite these repetitive storylines, one character who earns significant growth in Season 2 is Isla’s best friend and right-hand, Ali Lee. Since Isla became president, Ali has taken on a lot more responsibility within the organization. She champions Isla and the team, but has a harder time championing herself for a raise and getting her office back after Cam moves into hers. This divide between Ali’s friendship with Isla and what she deserves professionally brings a new tension, and while Brenda Song’s comedic delivery remains top-notch, this particular arc highlights the full scope of her talents. It also allows the show to purposefully dig into Isla and Ali’s friendship, which gives Isla the chance to realize how important Ali is in her life.
‘Running Point’ Season 2 Is at Its Best With the Entire Gordon Family

Running Point is about Isla Gordon and the challenges she faces as a female president chasing down a championship, and both the pressure and double standards are even more apparent with Cam’s prodigal return. However, the series is at its best when centered around the lovable yet morally loose Gordon family. As dysfunctional as they can be, they (mostly) have each other’s backs. Whether it’s Sandy confiding in Ness about his new situationship or the family recruiting a distant cousin for a rivalry basketball game, they show up for each other.

As much as Cam spends Season 2 undermining his family and ultimately dividing himself from his siblings, he’s part of the fabric that makes the Gordons winners. Plus, it’s nice to see him try to bond with his newest sibling, Jackie (Fabrizio Guido). Some of the strongest scenes of the season are when all five Gordons are present, the chemistry flowing back and forth between Hudson, Theroux, MacArthur, Tarver, and Guido. For as competitive as the Gordons can get, the actors have found that sweet spot where they complement each other well in these group scenes. The best comedy shows have a strong ensemble at the center. From there, it builds out its side characters, which only makes the series stronger. Running Point already has a firm foundation, and Season 2 expands on that by drafting the likes of Ray Romano, Ken Marino, and the Oscar-winning Octavia Spencer onto the team. Despite a few shortcomings, Running Point Season 2 continues a successful streak for Netflix thanks to the cast’s chemistry and the sharp writing. With where the season ends, it would be a shame if the show wasn’t given the chance to three-peat.
