Paapa Essiedu May Play Severus Snape In HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series
Dec 5, 2024
It’s official: HBO‘s “Harry Potter” series will start shooting next summer. But before that, an entire ensemble needs to be cast for the seven-season series, and so far, no one’s officially announced. That could change soon, though, and there’s an intriguing name circling one of show’s most dynamic roles: that of Potions Professor Severus Snape.

So who’s reportedly a favorite for the role? THR reports that it’s none other than British actor Paapa Essiedu. Essiedu is a veteran TV actor with with starring roles “Gangs Of London,” “I May Destroy You,” “The Lazarus Project,” and more, so he’s on stranger to the medium. But is he the right person for the role? Alan Rickman‘s performance as the smart, snide, and feared Hogwarts professor will be a lot to live up to, and Essiedu isn’t exactly how Snape is described in J.K. Rowling‘s books. But then Essiedu being considered for Snape may hint at a more diverse cast for HBO’s series than the films that ran from 2001 to 2011.
Will Essiedu take the part? THR notes an offer is on the table for the actor, but it’s unclear if negotiations have indeed started. That makes sense, as no one else officially joined the cast list yet. Some big name actors eye major roles in the series, however. It’s confirmed that Mark Rylance is in talks to star as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, but there’s no traction to the rumors that HBO wants Cillian Murphy as their Lord Voldemort. As for the lead roles of Harry, Ron, and Hermoine? There’s no news on that front at all, which should clarify how far long HBO’s casting procress really is.
If Essiedu lands the Snape role, it would be the most high-profile role of his career. The British actor started his thespian career with the Royal Shakespeare Company, with title roles in productions of “Hamlet” and “King Lear.” Stateside, he’s probably best known for his roles in “Murder On The Orient Express” and “Men,” as well as the “Black Mirror” episode “Demon 79.” But securing Snape for a seven-season stretch would undoubtedly lead to more Hollywood roles for the actor, so time will tell.
As for HBO’s take on the possible Essiedu casting, here’s their press statement: “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.” Fair enough, HBO; give us nothing.
Stay tuned for more details on Essiedu’s possible casting in HBO’s “Harry Potter” and other casting news for this highly anticipated series.
