Prophecy Teaser Reveals Bene Gesserit Origins

Jul 19, 2024

Fans of Dune have something exciting to celebrate as the mythology continues to expand with the upcoming prequel series, Dune: Prophecy. The events take place thousands of years before director Denis Villeneuve’s lucrative film franchise, which in turn is based on the works of Frank Herbert. HBO just dropped a new teaser trailer for the series, which premieres in November.

The second teaser for Dune: Prophecy offers up more dialogue and different footage from the first snippet released back in May. The teaser is only a minute long, but it teases the drama to come, ending with Emily Watson’s Valya Harkonnen declaring that “Sacrifices must be made.” You can check out the new teaser below.

Dune: Prophecy Takes Place 10,000 Years Before the Events of the Films

Created by Diane Ademu-Joh, Dune: Prophecy takes its inspiration from the novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian Herbert (son of Frank Herbert) and Kevin J. Anderson. The series takes place 10,000 years before the events of the films and follows Valya and Tula Harkonnen (Watson and Olivia Williams) and the birth of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful sisterhood that obtains superhuman abilities which help them protect humankind. In addition to Watson and Williams, the series also stars Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae Tabu, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning and Yerin Ha.

Related Comparing the 2021 and 1984 Film Adaptions of Dune: Which version does it best? Science fiction saga “Dune” has captivated audiences ever since author Frank Herbert published the novel in 1965. Since then, famed directors David Lynch and Denis Villeneuve have both adapted the novel to major motion pictures. While the two films share some similarities, opinions often diverge with respect to which film did it better. In your opinion, which movie, the 1984 or 2021 version, did a better job at depicting Dune’s unique storyline?

Dune: Prophecy began development back when Legendary Entertainment acquired the television and film rights to the franchise in 2016. Villeneuve was put at the helm of the films, which became Dune and Dune: Part Two, while Legendary Television officially ordered Dune: Prophecy to series in 2019. The show has seen many creative overhauls over the last few years, but it ultimately landed with Alison Schapker serving as showrunner while Anna Foerster was tasked to direct several episodes of the series.

Dune: Prophecy was originally ordered as a Max streaming original, but it was recently decided that the series will premiere on HBO, along with several other high-profile series that were originally intended for the streaming service. The show will now premiere on the linear cable network and then stream on Max in a major rebranding strategy put in motion by Warner Bros. Discovery.

The Dune franchise is currently riding high off the success of Dune: Part Two, which garnered fantastic reviews and has become one of the highest-grossing films of 2024, pulling in $282.1 million domestically and $712 million at the worldwide box office. Due to the success of the second film, a follow-up based on Herbert’s Dune Messiah is currently in development.

Dune: Prophecy
will debut on HBO this November.
