Palpatine gaslights Anakin into trusting only him, using real-life manipulation techniques.
Licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright reveal why Emperor Palpatine, the Star Wars villain, is the ultimate manipulator. Played by Ian McDiarmid in the movies, Emperor Palpatine is the most powerful Sith Lord of all. He is also the arch-manipulator, skillfully orchestrating the invasion of Naboo, the Clone Wars, and the fall of Anakin Skywalker.
Now, licensed therapist Jonathan Decker and filmmaker Alan Seawright have cast a thoughtful eye over Palpatine’s manipulation of Anakin. As they note, Palpatine coveted power on every level – both on a galactic one, and in terms of his interpersonal relationships. They identify so many techniques Palpatine used to twist Anakin to his purposes.
Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious The senator for Naboo, Palpatine rose to power and influence during the dying days of the Republic. In reality, his public persona was just a mask; he was really Darth Sidious, greatest of the Sith Lords, and he used his political skills and Machiavellian cunning to bring down both the Republic and the Jedi. Palpatine ruled his Galactic Empire for decades, until he was betrayed by his apprentice, Darth Vader. Even this wasn’t enough to stop the Emperor, however, as he was resurrected by his followers – only to be defeated once again.Died Star Wars: Episode IX- The Rise Of Skywalker
Emperor Palpatine Knows Just How To Twist The Truth
George Lucas’ villain is a powerful and overstated villain, a Machiavellian schemer who loves to toy with those around him. There are so many moments in the Star Wars prequels in particular where McDiarmid gives a hint of a smile, allowing Palpatine’s malicious glee to show. Part of his skill lies in the fact he doesn’t just lie; he bends the truth, twisting it to his own ends. When Palpatine says the Jedi Council don’t trust Anakin, he is right; when he tells Anakin what emotions he senses roiling within the Chosen One’s heart, he is telling the truth.
He isn’t subtle, of course; George Lucas isn’t that kind of scriptwriter.
But Palpatine twists this truth into a very sinister form, gaslighting Anakin into believing the Sith Lord himself is the only one he can trust and depend on. Darth Sidious encourages Anakin to question everyone else, insisting he alone knows the secrets to Anakin’s heart. He isn’t subtle, of course; George Lucas isn’t that kind of scriptwriter. But he’s using the same techniques deployed by manipulators in real life.
This, fundamentally, is what gives Emperor Palpatine such an enduring legacy. He is the villain par excellence, the skilled manipulator who will always get his own way – but will fool you into thinking you chose it. In another world, one where he was a little less power-hungry, he’d have been the ultimate used-car salesman; but in Star Wars, he is something so much worse.
