Secret Wars if Russo Brothers Asked
Nov 1, 2024
Josh Brolin is definitely down to reprise the role of The Mad Titan in the MCU, but “Thanos has to fit” for the actor to return. The Oscar-nominated performer (Milk | Best Supporting Actor) had the pleasure of playing two iconic villains on the big screen for Marvel, thanks to his portrayals as Cable in Deadpool 2 and Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. And in a brand-new interview with Collider, Brolin broke down what it will take for him to come back, most likely in Avengers: Doomsday and/or Avengers: Secret Wars:
“I’m not kidding — There’s a thing with playing Thanos. It’s like, ‘Oh, they’re gonna bring Thanos back.’ It’s like Sicario; it has to be right. It’s like Ryan Reynolds and I talking about Taylor Swift, and we should be talking about Deadpool 4. But we go back and forth. Again, it’s what in his mind fits, what in my mind fits. Thanos has to fit if you’re going to bring him back. I would do anything that the Russos wanted me to do.”
After their unforgettable work on both Infinity War and Endgame, not to mention Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, Anthony and Joe Russo have been tasked with the awesome responsibility of helming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
And it’s no wonder Brolin is so loyal to the filmmaking team because the actor has such fond memories of working with the Russo brothers while his Infinity Gauntlet-wielding villain terrorized Marvel’s finest. However, when asked if he’d already been contacted to reprise the role of Thanos, Brolin didn’t say a word — he merely coughed, for what that’s worth.
Josh Brolin Reveals His Favorite Memory from Avengers: Endgame
Okay, so Josh Brolin won’t be joining the Green Lantern Corps in the DCU. It doesn’t really matter because the actor has become such an indelible part of the comic book world thanks to his poignant portrayal of Thanos. However, what might surprise some of the fans is Brolin’s favorite memory from shooting Avengers: Endgame, given what happens to his character in that particular moment. The actor elaborated in an interview with GQ by saying:
“When I was finally in a scene with people who I knew… [Mark] Ruffalo I knew, Don Cheadle I knew. So, we had a scene that we did together. And I’m on the ground, and the cameras are on me. They’re off camera, and I looked at Ruffalo — and I forgot my line. And I go, ‘What’s my line?’ Like he would know. It’s a different character [laughs]. It’s a different actor. And he looked at me. And he goes, ‘I don’t know.’”
Brolin, whose character was beheaded in this early Endgame scene by a Stormbreaker-wielding Thor (Chris Hemsworth), continued telling his story by saying:
“And I go, ‘You have to know what it is. What is it? What is it?’ And I knew it was coming. And like Chris [Hemsworth] is off there saying something. I don’t know what he’s saying… picking up this big thing [motions like he’s wielding Stormbreaker]. And I go, ‘What’s the line?’ And he [Ruffalo] actually gave me the line. And I remember, I thought that was so funny. I was like, ‘How the f— did you remember the line?’ Ruffalo is the nicest human being in the world, and the most giving human being. That’s my favorite memory of doing that movie.”
Related Captain Marvel Reportedly Has a Bigger Role in the New Avengers The new Avengers are starting to take shape ahead of Doomsday in 2026.
There are certainly more memories to be made should Brolin decide to reprise the role of Thanos. The Russo brothers’ return as the directors of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars could further course-correct the MCU, which Deadpool & Wolverine heavily contributed to this year. But it’s without question the jaw-dropping return of Robert Downey Jr., who will now portray Doctor Doom, which has created a feeling of hope for Marvel’s future feature films — and an undeniable buzz resonating throughout the fandom.
