‘Superman’ BTS Image of Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific Shared by James Gunn
Mar 12, 2025
Superman flies into theaters later this summer, but James Gunn has shared an early behind-the-scenes look at the film in celebration of one of the main cast members’ birthday. Among the many characters making their debut in the DC Universe in Superman is Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, a fan-favorite from the source material. He is set to be a key part of the upcoming DCU film, and what better way to celebrate the actor’s birthday than to release a new look at him in the highly-anticipated production.
On Instagram, Gunn shared a photo of Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, as well as Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, on the set of Superman. The scene being filmed takes place in the desert, and appeared briefly in the record-breaking teaser released in December. The caption reads, “Happy Birthday to my great friend and great actor @iamedigathegi, who you can see in all his technological glory in #Superman in July!.” Check out the social post below:

‘Superman’ Gets Conflicting Test Screening Reactions Leaving DC Fans Not Knowing What To Think
First reactions to James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ are incredibly divided.
Not pictured are the other superheroes featured in Superman that will be fighting right alongside Mister Terrific. The character will help lead a team comprised of Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner aka Green Lantern, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho. In the comics, Metamorpho is a member of the short-lived superhero team known as the Terrifics, titled after its founder, Mister Terrific. In Superman, it seems the new group of heroes is a version of the Justice League International, founded by Maxwell Lord, who is being played by Guardians of the Galaxy star Sean Gunn.
Mister Terrific Has a Major Role in ‘Superman’
Warner Bros. Pictures
During the first set visit for Superman, James Gunn told reporters that the supporting cast of heroes wouldn’t be just glorified cameos. The upcoming film will be the official debut of the rebooted DC cinematic universe, and will introduce a litany of new superheroes. However, expect them to have a significant role in Superman’s journey, especially Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. As Gunn puts it, Mister Terrific is “the main character” of the aforementioned superhero group.
“I love Mister Terrific. These characters all get their moment in the sun. They all have their moments. They’re not just cameos, these are the characters. They’re supporting cast, but Mister Terrific is the main character of those characters. He actually has a big part of the plot. And so that was fun.”
Shockingly enough, Gathegi is no stranger to superhero movies. His time in Superman will likely be his most significant role in the genre after appearing in X-Men: First Class as Darwin, a powerful mutant whose unlikely demise has been a debate among fan circles for years now. Hopefully, as Mister Terrific, not only will Gathegi get a chance to play a more popular superhero, but have a role in the DCU moving forward in subsequent projects after Superman. After all, Gunn rarely introduces major comic characters in his films if he does not already have plans for them in the future.

Sean Baker Collaborator Shin Ching-Tsou’s Debut Is An Honest, Darling Challenge Of Patriarchal Norms
There's an incandescent sweetness to Left-Handed Girl, the solo directorial debut from long-time Sean Baker collaborator Shin Ching-Tsou. Co-written and edited by him, the film is nonetheless distinctively Ching-Tsou's, a romantically funny rebuke of patriarchal conventions and Taiwanese traditionalism. Centering…

The Twits Review: Chaotic, Overstuffed, and Uneven
