The Best Sitcom of the 2000s Gets an Impressive but All-Too-Short Revival
Apr 14, 2026
The year was 2000. Not only had humanity just begun a new century, but it also entered truly uncharted territory by entering a new millennium. Fashion trends and pop culture references may have come and gone throughout the decades, but one institution that has been a staple since the dawn of television has always been the family sitcom. From I Love Lucy to All in the Family to Everybody Loves Raymond, nothing for the average American beat coming home from a long day at work and wanting to escape the mundanity of suburban life by watching a comedic story about a much more entertaining suburban life. Naturally, any new sitcom at the time wanted to adapt to the cultural trends of the era, and no show quite did that better than Malcolm in the Middle.
Co-created by Linwood Boomer, Malcolm in the Middle not only helped launch the careers of big names like eventual Breaking Bad icon Bryan Cranston and Agent Cody Banks star Frankie Muniz but also perfectly captured theoverwhelming physical, emotional, and even financial stress of the early 2000s. For six years and 7 seasons, Muniz starred as the titular Malcolm — a boy genius whose unbelievable brains can’t help him avoid his strict mother Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), his aloof father Hal (Cranston), his delinquent older brother Reese (Justin Berfield), his troublesome younger sibling Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan), and other members of his turbulent family. The original show reached a natural and satisfying conclusion in 2006 when Malcolm graduated high school. Now, Hulu has helped revive the fan-favorite series with Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, and fans can rest easy knowing that this is a more than worthy (if not a smidge too short) return to one of the early 2000s’ best shows.
What Is ‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’ About?

Picking up exactly 20 years after the events of the original show, Malcolm has been more than a little busy. Now running his own successful company, Malcolm is now the father of a brilliant young teenager named Leah (Keeley Karsten), the partner of a stunning woman named Tristan (Kiana Madeira), and best of all, he has not had any direct contact with his dysfunctional family in over a decade. It’s a charade that’s been shockingly successful for years, but when the entire family begins preparations for Hal and Lois’ anniversary, Malcolm will have to decide what’s more important: spending time with his loved ones or preserving his own sanity. Linwood Boomer returns to the series he co-founded 26 years earlier, this time as the sole creator for Life’s Still Unfair, and he hasn’t skipped a beat when it comes to breathing life into this incredible cast of characters after so much time away. Malcolm in the Middle has always stood out for how it balances somewhat mean-spirited yet endearing humor (a common occurrence for anybody who grew up with several siblings) with brief splashes of genuinely heartfelt moments. Some scenes of Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair are absolutely hilarious, but the emotional moments are really what help the revival series soar.

Why ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Is Only Four Episodes (And Why It Almost Stayed Dead) [Exclusive]
Linwood Boomer and producer Tracy Katsky discuss Cranston’s role in the revival, the idea that brought the series back, and how we can get even more.
All four episodes of Life’s Still Unfair are rock solid from start to finish, but the fourth and final installment really makes this return to the beloved sitcom worth it. Brilliant dynamics between every member of Malcolm’s family, a wealth of cameos that never feel too overbearing, and what is undoubtedly the most tearjerking scene in the revival or the original series are just some of the ways the show’s ending sticks the landing with top marks. Amid all the well-deserved laughs and unexpected tears, Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair also avoids the mistake that many other modern revivals make by never feeling like it’s too beholden to the past. While yes, there are a lot of cameos that will make fans happy, there are enough completely new, culturally relevant ideas here that keep things from feeling like a greatest hits rehash.
‘Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair’ Boasts a Stellar Cast Who Could Have Benefited From More Screentime
Boomer isn’t the only one who doesn’t skip a beat after 20 years away, as almost the entire cast of the original series also returns for Life’s Still Unfair. The only exception is Erik Per Sullivan, who declined to return as Dewey and is thus replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, who does a marvelous job playing an older version of the character with all the same mannerisms and character traits. Despite guest roles in Harley Quinn and The Rookie, the new revival marks Frankie Muniz’s first series regular role in a television show since his flagship series ended, and even though he’s 20 years older, Malcolm is still just as charming as ever, and his charismatic performance is easily among the best in his career. Seeing Malcolm and the antics of his brothers is all well and good, but let’s be honest here. We’re all here to see Lois and Hal again. The chemistry between Kaczmarek and Cranston is nothing short of legendary in the original series and is one of many reasons why they’re considered to be one of the best sitcom couples of all time. Their dynamic as the strict rule-following mother and the emotional, fun-loving dad is just as infectious now as it was in the year 2000, and Life’s Still Unfair makes the wise decision to dedicate a large majority of its time to their once-in-a-lifetime romance.

The ‘Breaking Bad’ actor truly can do it all.
However, while Malcolm, Hal, and Lois make the most of their time on screen, the show’s huge ensemble of supporting characters isn’t able to have as much of a presence. Part of that is because there are just so many characters on display, with Reese and Dewey only making up a fraction. There’s series mainstays like the eldest brother Francis (Christopher Masterson) and his wife Piama (Emy Coligado), but then you also have a wealth of new and great characters like Malcolm’s daughter Leah, Malcolm’s girlfriend Tristan, and his youngest sibling, Kelly (Vaughan Murrae). The newcomers feel right at home in the series while also bringing completely new ideas to the table, such as Leah bringing her own unique spin to Malcolm’s fourth-wall breaking and Kelly introducing some wonderful non-binary representation.
A show ending by leaving the audience wanting more is often a good spot to be in, and while that’s primarily the case for Life’s Still Unfair, the Malcolm in the Middle revival does struggle to give all its characters a fair shake in just 4 half-hour episodes. Perhaps this can be rectified if Hulu does decide to do more if the show is a big enough success, but at the same time, the now-limited series’ finale is just so good that if this really is the last time we see Malcolm’s family, this is a more than worthy conclusion. Life may still be unfair for the 2000s’ greatest sitcom family, but they are still just as charming, well-written, and endearing now as they were back then. Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair premieres on April 10 on Hulu.
