The Most Controversial Oscar Contender of 2025 Enters Prime Video’s Top 10

Dec 22, 2025

Having opened to poor reviews some weeks ago, director Luca Guadagnino’s latest film, After the Hunt, hasn’t exactly been the rabblerouser that it was perhaps intended to be. The movie deals with thorny themes, and deliberately offers what many would consider an unsavory perspective on them. After the Hunt immediately took the streaming crown after a disastrous box office run, and continues to hold its ground despite the arrival of fresh competition. Starring Julia Roberts as a senior college professor whose younger male colleague is accused of sexual misconduct by a student, the movie also features Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri. According to FlixPatrol, After the Hunt crept back into Prime Video’s global top 10 charts on Friday, when the leader board was topped by the recently released Tell Me Softly. Produced on a massive reported budget of $80 million — everybody probably got paid their quote on this one — the movie earned under $10 million at the box office. An argument could be made that it was always destined for home video success, but it isn’t unheard of for movies to do well on both fronts. After the Hunt opened to poor reviews, and is now sitting at a 37% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s audience score isn’t much better, at 39%. The site’s consensus reads, “After the Hunt doesn’t lack for fine performances, especially from a standout Julia Roberts, but its coy followthrough on incendiary themes makes for an uncharacteristically toothless provocation from director Luca Guadagnino.” In his review, Collider’s Nate Richard described it as a “messy movie,” and added, “as flawed as the movie is, it is memorable.”
Luca Guadagnino Has Had an Uneven Run Recently

Guadagnino was coming off of another prominent flop, the Daniel Craig-led psychological drama Queer. Released last year, Queer opened to mostly positive reviews, and is now sitting at a “certified fresh” 77% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. It earned less than $8 million on a reported $50 million-plus budget. It was only a few months before Queer that Guadagnino released his biggest hit, the psychological sports drama Challengers, which made nearly $100 million at the global box office, against a $55 million reported budget. Starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, the movie was a major crowd-pleaser, and now holds a 76% audience rating on RT.

You can watch all three films at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
