Mar 6, 2023

Can a spy recover his past before it’s too late? “Citadel” represents another dramatic offering for Prime Video; the service recently saw quality output increase with the big budget “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” and Christoph Waltz’s dark comedy thriller “The Consultant.” Now, its venturing into the realm of spy thrillers with this new series.

As seen in the trailer for “Citadel,” the series tells the story of a couple of former spies who regain their memories and attempt to find out what happened to their former employer, the Citadel. Apparently, the agency fell apart and all traces of it were removed. Cue the ominous music and thrilling espionage hijinks. What’s most interesting about “Citadel” might be the behind-the-scenes ambitions. You see, “Citadel” is the first series in a budding franchise with numerous spinoffs already in production or development. The idea is to have each region of the world represented with its very own “Citadel” spinoff that will all coordinate and tie in with each other.

“Citadel” stars Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, both come to the project after high-profile roles. Madden starred in the Marvel film “Eternals” while Chopra Jones portrayed Sati in “The Matrix Resurrections.” The series also features actor turned culinary traveler Stanley Tucci as Bernard Orlick. The Russo Brothers, of ‘Avengers‘ fame, serve as producers on the new show (and franchise, as a whole).
The series’ official synopsis:
“Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.”
Former spies work to stop a global conspiracy in “Citadel.” The Prime Video exclusive debuts on April 28 with subsequent episodes premiering weekly through the end of May. Watch the trailer below.
