A dysfunctional marriage or relationship brings its brand of horror to many in life. News reports abound when such events take a turn for the worse and initiate unfortunate results for all. Director Andrew de Burgh’s The Seductress From Hell takes a look at such events with a wiry eye towards the horrific when an abused woman suddenly discovers a new hobby.
Modern Los Angeles is the setting as Zara Pereira (Rocio Scotto), an out-of-work female actor, begins a roller-coaster ride into darkness triggered by her abusive husband, Robert Pereira (Jason Faunt). The picture opens with Zara as she sneaks out of bed. At the same time, her husband sleeps through a box of her possessions that includes cryptic notebooks of body drawings and paraphernalia bordering the mystical.
“…a look at such events with a wiry eye towards the horrific when an abused woman suddenly discovers a new hobby.“
Zara and Robert have money troubles exasperated by her husband’s work and stems from difficulty landing acting gigs. Robert is upset about his work as it is a ‘Lacky job’ for rich people who summon him on all days, even holidays. Robert takes his frustration out on Zara by not supporting her and constantly putting her down with remarks about poor cooking and wine. Even though he professes an understanding of culinary arts, they are drinking white chardonnay with spaghetti, which is a rather poor example of a wine glass. The dialogue is tension-filled with gaps and clipped delivery, indicating veiled threats from Robert that Zara must improve.
When a potential TV series falls through for Zara, the strain on their relationship worsens as Robert becomes abusive to the point of sexually assaulting his wife because it is ‘time to pleasure”. If that isn’t enough to send crying Zara over the edge of a disastrous dinner party involving their older, well-to-do friends Derek Patel ( Raj Jawa) and Maya Valentina ( Kylie Rohrer). The dinner malfunctions and the drink is not good enough, resulting in Robert’s physical attack in the form of a punch. This blow begins Zara’s descent into darkness and a realization that there is something better in life to be found.
