‘Thunderbolts*’ Star Lewis Pullman Teases Sentry’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ MCU Role
May 23, 2025
One of the highlights of Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts* is its talented ensemble cast. Among the returning anti-heroes, such as Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Wyatt Rusell as John Walker, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan as Bucky, and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova was the introduction of Lewis Pullman as Bob, later known as Sentry and eventually the Void. Pullman was the surprise highlight of Thunderbolts*, as the actor brought a tragic and nuanced performance that became the movie’s emotional center. Now, he is looking forward to exploring more of the character in Avengers: Doomsday.
When Pullman was first cast in the role of Sentry, the actor felt like he didn’t belong in the part of Sentry, as he would tell Entertainment Weekly: “Oddly, there was a dissonance, which was very informative for I think how Bob might feel. I felt like I didn’t belong in it, despite it being catered to my body. When we put it on [for] a screen test, I was like, ‘Can I just have five minutes alone with this thing?'” Now, the actor seems to have become much more comfortable with the character, especially with the positive reception surrounding Thunderbolts*.

Bob is now easily one of the most complex and powerful characters in the MCU, whose strength seemingly rivals that of Thor or the Hulk. Unfortunately, much like the latter character, Bob seemingly has an identity crisis to contend with before he can use the vast amount of power at his disposal. The Void seems to be a looming threat over everyone, with the Thunderbolts (now called the New Avengers) keeping a close eye on Bob to ensure he doesn’t drown in the darkness again.
Bob aka Sentry Will Continue To Develop in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Now that Lewis Pullman has been confirmed to return as Bob in the upcoming event film Avengers: Doomsday, there has been plenty of speculation about what will be next for the character. The post-credits scene for Thunderbolts* (helmed by Doomsday directors Joe and Anthony Russo) showed Bob not being directly involved with the New Avengers out of fear of the Void. Pullman was excited by the opportunity to continue to explore the character and his mindset after the cathartic, emotional conclusion of Thunderbolts*:
“I was so surprised and honored to hear that I was going to be able to dip my toes into Doomsday, Because I wasn’t sure how much of his memory was lost, and whether he’s covering, or whether it’s really real and he is fully back at square one. And does that mean that he has to relearn all of these emotional valuable lessons that he’s garnered throughout the course [of this movie]? Or is that something that kind of becomes inherently a part of him? It’s a really interesting thing to grapple with as an actor… It could go in a lot of different directions.”
It will be all hands-on-deck for Avengers: Doomsday, which has been teased to feature multiversal heroes banding together to take on Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.). So, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Bob isn’t forced to use his powers as the Sentry, though whether that creates more problems than solutions for the Avengers remains to be seen.
