Tim Rozon Says the Demons in Season 2 of Surreal Estate Are So Much Scarier Than Before

Sep 28, 2023

NOTE: This interview took place prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.SyFy’s Surreal Estate has plenty of frights and mystery in escrow. The quirky hit show won audiences over in season one as real estate agent Luke Roman was bombarded with surprises at The Roman Agency. Par for the course for a boutique real estate brokerage firm that specialized in “metaphysically engaged” properties. Haunted houses, folks, are we right? Fortunately, Luke stood out among other real estate agents. He has a groovy connection to the spiritual plane and senses any presence inhabiting his clients’ homes. Taking on the houses others freely toss aside, Luke and his team become the best kind of negotiators to close the deal.

The series stars Wynonna Earp’s Tim Rozon (as Luke), Sarah Levy (as Susan), Adam Korson (as Father Phil), Maurice Dean Went (as tech genius August), Tennille Read (as Megan, Luke’s love interest), and Savannah Basley (as the firm’s secretary, Zooey). The big news going into season two carries over season one’s wild end point: Luke lost his psychic powers. Now what? Exactly. It’s all part of the fun in season two. Tim Rozon opened up with MovieWeb in this exclusive interview.

Things Get Even More Surreal
SyFy

Without his special powers, our beloved Luke is in for a ride this season. Look for him to wrestle with uncertainty as he attempts to work with an engaged property using only his instincts. “Right off the bat in season two, Luke no longer has his powers and ability to communicate with the other side, which was the main point of season one. I mean, we sell the houses that no one else can sell because they’re haunted and our kind of secret weapon to do that was Luke’s powers, because he could communicate with the entities to try and get them out of there, sometimes peacefully,” Rozon said.

Luke doesn’t have that option in season two. “It’s super fun because the demons and entities that we’re dealing with in season two are so much scarier,” he adds. “Luke doesn’t have the powers to try and calm them down. Now in each episode, we try to find ways to deal with them. The stakes definitely have been raised.”

Rozon said that similar to season one, where one entity took precedent over all the entities, there will be one running entity throughout the upcoming season. “When people find out who or what that entity is, I think their mind will be blown. Kind of like the house was from season one, which was Luke’s sister. Well, technically his mother, who was his sister, you know?”

Translation: The Donovan House was the main threat for the Roman Agency in season one. Luke eventually communicated with the house and audiences learned that when the agency shut off the quirky portal in the basement, eager souls were no longer able to transcend to the other side. Most of them fed on the murky energy brewing within the home. These clever storylines made Surreal Estate stand out among other trippy and frightful romps.

Why Audiences Tune In
SyFy

Elsewhere in season two, look for Susan — Sarah Levy of Schitt’s Creek (also featuring Rozon) in another great role — to swoon over a mysterious house that holds a special power over her. Watch out for that, Susan. Rozon, Levy, and the rest of the cast infuse this series with charm and spunk in equal measure, which is what made Surreal Estate so enjoyable the first time around.

Speaking to why he feels the show struck a chord, Rozon said: “I think it’s because it has the right mix of horror and humor. I think if it was just pure humor, it can be just jokes. But there’s a seriousness to what we’re dealing with, yet we’re also finding humor as we deal with some of the scariest things, which is how I actually deal with that in real life. Sometimes when things are scary for me, I try to find the humor in it. That’s kind of what people can relate to and appreciate.”

The character of Luke is appealing overall, and Rozon captures the character’s highs and lows very effectively. He explained:

Luke is so vulnerable, which I love. I love playing a man who is vulnerable and can experience his feelings, and deal with them. Sometimes he really does in season two. He just deals with all the stuff he needs to deal with — the baggage, the emotional things.

“There are actually a lot of interesting parallels between myself and the character,” he quickly added. “Sometimes when we’re filming, I’m like, ‘Wow, did they know this about me when they wrote this?’ Yeah, my character deals with some stuff, which is great. Maybe I’ll follow suit.’”

Season two of Surreal Estate premieres on SyFy on October 4.
