The Fate of Marvel’s ‘X-Men ’97’ Officially Confirmed Ahead of MCU Reboot

Jul 26, 2026

Marvel Animation is in the middle of releasing the second season of X-Men ’97, which serves as a sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series from the 1990s. Before bringing the classic X-Men team back into action to massive success in 2024, the show was quickly renewed for Season 2, which started off with the mutants separated across three different timelines and taking on the threat of the supervillain Apocalypse. This season has already delivered one wild gut punch after another, including the death of Magneto and shocking moments for Wolverine, Cyclops, Professor X, and others. Season 3 of X-Men ’97 was officially confirmed for development at New York Comic-Con 2025, and production on the new season wrapped during Jul. 2026. Considering the story is still unfolding in Season 2, there are no indications yet as to what will happen in Season 3, but the show is expected to return to Disney+ sometime in 2027. Now, as the wait continues to find out what the mutants will do against Apocalypse and other threats, a new update teases whether the show will move into new episodes. During the Marvel Comics to Screen panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, X-Men ’97 was confirmed to be renewed for Season 4. Additionally, along with the news that Season 3 had completed filming, the new season is in the early stages of production. While there is no timeframe for how long production on Season 4 will take, the show is expected to have annual releases moving forward, following a two-year gap between Season 1 and Season 2.

This also comes as Marvel Studios preps a live-action X-Men reboot within the MCU, which is not expected to arrive until sometime in Phase 7. Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier is set to take on the same job for this movie, and Hunger Games writer Michael Lesslie is developing the script. As of this writing, the story for this movie is still unconfirmed, and there are no indications as to who will be cast as the new crop of X-Men. However, the expectation is that Marvel will lean younger for this team than the Fox X-Men movies did, allowing the group to grow into their roles and evolve as a team for the next decade and longer.

New episodes of X-Men ’97 Season 2 debut on Disney+ on Wednesdays at 12 a.m. PT/3 a.m. ET.
