Zendaya on Euphoria’s Season 3 Fate: “It’s Beyond Me”

Apr 20, 2024

Summary

Zendaya’s comments on Euphoria Season 3’s delay offer little clarity, as the fate of the series remains uncertain.
Several cast members express hope for the show’s return, but one anonymous actor doubts if a third season will happen.
Despite ongoing delays, HBO and Sam Levinson are committed to delivering an exceptional third season, possibly in 2025 with a time jump.

Euphoria Season 3 remains shrouded in mystery. Zendaya, who stars as Rue and serves as an executive producer for the HBO series, is the latest to speak out about the show’s delay. Unfortunately, the Challengers actress’ comments are doing little to clear the air. During a conversation with Variety at the Los Angeles premiere of Challengers, Zendaya told the publication she “is not in charge” of whether the series will return, adding:

“If it’s right for the characters and everything turns out the way it should, of course. But it’s beyond me.”

Last month, HBO released a statement that the third season of Euphoria was further delayed and that its “in-demand cast” was allowed to “pursue other opportunities” (initial delays resulted from the Hollywood strikes and the death of Euphoria star Angus Cloud). This followed speculation that the series would not return for a third season.

Since then, several series stars have spoken about their hopes for the future of the hit series. Hunter Schafer, who portrays Jules Vaughn, said she missed the Euphoria team, adding, “Whatever happens, I’m just excited to get back together once it’s time and catch up and hang out.” Storm Reid, who stars in the series as Gia Bennett, said she hoped viewers would be “able to finish the show.” While Reid and Schafer are optimistic about Euphoria’s return, one of the show’s actors (who spoke in anonymity) has doubts a third season will transpire. After speaking of all the production delays, they added:

“Because I’m an actor I will always be excited about any acting work so yes I am looking forward to returning. I just don’t think it will happen.”

Related Why Euphoria Season 3 Being Delayed Is a Good Thing Euphoria’s third season was recently delayed indefinitely, and despite the show’s popularity, easing it into its cancellation might be for the best.

According to their statement, HBO and creator Sam Levinson “remain committed to making an exceptional third season,” which they hope is ready for a 2025 release. When (and if) the series returns, things will be a bit different from when we last saw the high schoolers.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show in January, Jacob Elordi told host Jimmy Fallon:

“I hope [filming is] soon, otherwise they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something. I’m going to have, like, a bad back, walking down the hallway.” He added: “I’m assuming that we’re going to have to go forward. Otherwise it’s going to seem like a weird bit.”

As it turns out, Euphoria’s third season is expected to include a time jump, seeing Rue, Nate, Jules, and the rest of the crew years into the future.

Euphoria’s talented ensemble cast includes Zendaya, Elordi, Reid, Schafer, Sydney Sweeney, Maude Apatow, the late Cloud, Eric Dane, Alexa Demie, Nika King, and Domingo Coleman.

Zendaya’s latest project, Challengers, hits theaters on April 26. The romantic sports film, directed by Luca Guadagnino, follows Tashi (Zendaya), a former tennis prodigy turned coach married to a champion on a losing streak. Her strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. Alongside Zendaya, Challengers stars Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. The film has earned early critical praise.
