Original Sin’ Creator Explains How Fans Are Getting Two New Shows

Dec 17, 2024

Longtime Dexter fans were shocked earlier this year when it was revealed that there were not one, but two TV shows in the works that would center around everyone’s favorite vigilante serial killer: Dexter: Original Sin, and Dexter: Resurrection. One announcement would have been enough to satiate our appetite for more following the ending of New Blood a couple of years ago, but as it turns out, the reason we’re getting double the fun is all thanks to star Michael C. Hall, who first played the eponymous killer in the original series that ran from 2006 to 2013.
Speaking with Screen Rant, creator and showrunner Clyde Phillips mentioned that it was Hall who kickstarted the plan for Resurrection while Original Sin was still in production. He hadn’t been doing much since the conclusion of the sequel series in 2022, and knew there were more stories in the Dexter universe left to be told. There was just one problem: he supposedly died at the end of New Blood. Luckily, everyone found a way around that.

“Michael Hall called me and said, ‘You know what? I’ve got Dexter in my bones. Clyde, you’ve got Dexter in your bones. Let’s keep going. Can you figure it out? How can I have survived what happened in the finale?’

“My team and I figured it out, pitched it to Michael. He loved it. Pitched it to Showtime and Paramount. They’re not going to say no to this. I mean, it’s their biggest show! And we start shooting that in a month. So, all while shooting Original Sin, we were writing Resurrection.”

How ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Connects to the Original Series

The prequel is poised to fit smoothly into the ‘Dexter’ timeline.

It’s interesting to note that Resurrection only came to fruition after Original Sin began filming, so one has to wonder what the plan was for the debut episode before Hall signed on for another sequel series. Titled “And in the Beginning…” the prequel opens with Dexter being brought back to life after the seemingly fatal gunshot wound suffered at the hands of his son, Harrison. This nicely sets up everything for when Resurrection makes its premiere next year, but if the star hadn’t signed on for the project, what were the plans for Original Sin’s opening scene?
‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Has Been Met with Overwhelming Praise

Though it only has one episode in the can thus far, Dexter: Original Sin is already being lauded by fans for capturing the same magic the first series did back when it debuted in Oct. 2006. Starring Patrick Gibson as the younger version of the serial killer, the series takes a look at his early years after college when he joins Miami Metro as a paid intern, and learns to hone his craft before going on to be known as the Bay Harbor Butcher.
“They couldn’t have picked a better actor to play young Dex,” said @SpookySuplex over on X. Another user, @KurtSteph87, echoed those sentiments, saying that although they were weary about the prequel series going into it, by the time it was all over, they were hooked.

“I was actually pleasantly surprised by #DexterOriginalSin. As a hardcore fan of the original show, I was afraid this would be crappy and not follow the source material. So happy to be proven wrong. 1st episode adds another layer of insight into Harry Morgan and why he took Dex in.”

Look for Dexter: Resurrection to debut in June 2025, and catch new episodes of Dexter: Original Sin every Friday on Paramount+ with Showtime, and Sunday’s on Showtime’s linear cable channel.
